General History

In the early 1990s, Porsche was struggling to establish a new direction for both racing and their ongoing line of 911 offerings. And while much of the road car challenges would be solved within a few years, the racing dilemma required immediate action for the annual season – thus entering the RSR. Designed to compete in European Pro GT racing and the North American Supercar series, the 1993 964-based Carrera RSR 3.8 heralded Porsches return to production-based motorsport competition – one that would result in yet another onslaught of victories for the marque, though not without some challenging engineering to get there. Powered by the venerable naturally aspirated 3.8-liter air-cooled flat-six Type M64/04 engine, the pistons and intake system were considerably reworked to deliver more horsepower and torque. The factory 325 horsepower ratings were quite conservative considering the engine featured increased compression, dual ignition, individual throttle butterflies, Bosch electronic fuel injection, and dry-sump lubrication. All were outfitted with a five-speed manual transaxle and limited-slip differentials.

Construction for the body began with a basic 964 which was treated to significant enhancements including seam-welding the steel body for added strength. Each bare shell was then delivered to Matter (Porsche’s go-to German manufacturer for OE roll bar construction) for the installation of a fully triangulated roll cage. Further modifications included the installation of light-alloy doors and front lid, suspension settings purloined from Carrera Cup series cars using stainless steel Heim joints, a steel engine cover to support the dual plane fiberglass rear wing, lightweight front and rear bumper fascia, thinner side and rear windows, and a large front-mounted oil cooler. Additional enhancements included competition Bilstein dampers and Turbo S-derived brakes with 18-inch center-lock Speedline modular wheels. The resultant weight savings trimmed the car to just 2,673 pounds dry. The RSR not only met the FIA minimum weight limit, it resulted in one of the most exhilarating performance cars of the period achieving 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed well over 180mph. Significant numbers considering the era.

History of this Carrera RSR

This Carrera RSR 3.8 is supported by documentation including the original sales invoice and order form which indicate chassis 496096 was completed in December 1993, finished in Grand Prix White (L908) with a black single racing seat, 120-liter fuel tank, unassisted steering, air jacks, center-lock 18-inch RS 3.8 wheels, double fuel-filler, Le Mans exhaust, and a reserve fuel pump.

One of three Carrera RSR 3.8s originally commissioned by US-based Morse Motorsport, the car was instead allocated to Japan, where it was acquired by Nova Engineering of Shizuoka-Ken. Nova Engineering is believed to have campaigned this RSR as intended, entering it in several rounds of the All-Japan GT Championship. In 1995, the car was reportedly sold to Team Kunimitsu, who then campaigned this RSR during the 1995 All-Japan GT Championship series.

In 2007, under new ownership. chassis 496096 returned to Germany, where it was commissioned to the renowned Freisinger Motorsport of Karlsruhe, Germany for a comprehensive restoration including cosmetic and mechanical systems. Over the past twenty years, this RSR has been proudly displayed as part of a well-respected private collection. In May 2025, Roock Sportsystem of Leverkusen, Germany overhauled the fuel system, including a bladder cleaning, fresh foam, and new in-tank fuel pumps. The fuel injectors and exhaust system were also cleaned. In addition to the recent service invoice, this RSR is accompanied by a report verifying the matching-numbers engine as well as the “Deutscher Motor Sport Bund” passport granting eligibility to a host of premier historic racing venues including Rennsport, the Rolex Reunion, Velocity Invitational, and the Daytona 24 hour and Sebring 12-hour Classics.

General Condition

Today, this Porsche RSR presents in excellent cosmetic condition throughout. The Grand Prix white finish is smooth, consistent, and glossy throughout. The factory correct steel, alloy and fiberglass body panels are in excellent condition with consistent door, trunk, and hood gaps, and excellent fit along the lighter weight front and rear bumpers. The original thinner side glass, windshield, and rear glass are also in excellent condition. The gold finish center lock 18” Speedline modular wheels are in excellent condition and currently wear a set of Toyo Proxis tires. Among the many exclusive features of the RSR, the dual plane rear spoiler, hunkered down stance, unique oil cooler front air intake, and wide wheels give this car an amazing physical presence.

The interior reflects the spartan weight-saving agenda Porsche achieved by removing all but the essential elements needed for race duty. The black cloth Recaro driver’s seat is correct and the materials are very nice featuring a centered Porsche crest, Takata racing harness, and Recaro branding on the headrest. The door panels and dashboard are in excellent condition and the original Porsche gauges are beautifully preserved with colorful nomenclature fronted by a Momo steering wheel and flanked by a five-speed shift lever nestled within the black factory center console. Additional items include a fire suppression system, red cutoff and fire handles, and the Matter-built triangular roll cage finished in matching Grand Prix White.

The engine compartment and front storage compartment are in excellent condition with correct factory finishes reflecting factory components with various consumable soft items replaced as needed. The original matching numbers engine is correct and properly maintained, retaining correct Porsche parts including the factory intake system, correct exhaust, and accessories. The front storage area features the large capacity fuel tank, front strut tower brace, and double fuel filler specifically fitted at the factory to facilitate time-saving fills. The underside of the car is remarkably fresh, consistent, and well presented. There is no visual evidence of structural compromise on the chassis or any of the major suspension attachment points. Engine and gearbox castings are in excellent condition as are the suspension components, hoses, and various fluid lines.

As many drivers and enthusiasts in the Porsche community have found in recent years, a new market opportunity has opened up for owners and buyers of RSRs. Enthusiasts and builders have made successful applications for title in lenient US states, adding a passenger's seat, de-tuning the engine mapping, and raising the suspension, to make rowdy street cars. These reversible enhancements result in a near full competition car experience while driving on the street. There are some period drivers, like Cout Wegner and Kelly Collins who are leading spirited back road runs in rural areas where these cars can truly stretch their legs.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a properly prepared, fully documented RSR, featuring some of the most impressive factory specifications from an era that literally defined the future of Porsche at a pivotal time. One of just 51 examples built, this matching numbers Porsche RSR is ready to offer the next owner a unique driving experience, one that is sure to delight any dedicated Porsche enthusiast who wishes to participate in any of the numerous vintage racing events for this series car.
