General History

As the successor to the 964 Carrera 3.8 RSR, the Porsche 993 Cup 3.8 RSR was launched in 1997. Built for the GT3 class and national racing series, the RSR used the racing chassis from the 993 GT2, retaining the same 3.8-liter engine with three variants available in different states of tune, mated to the vastly improved 6-speed manual transmission. Stripped to the bare essentials, each car was specially built but all were outfitted with a single racing seat, limited-slip differential, triangulated roll bar, central locking 18-inch Cup wheels, strut bar, fixed spoiler, dual-plane rear wing, 75-liter fuel tank, and power steering.

History of this Carrera RSR

This RSR 3.8 was completed in December 1996 and was prepped for racing just two months after delivery where it successfully completed the 1997 24 Hours of Daytona, finishing 3rd in the GTS-3 class and 11th overall. A few weeks later, at the 1997 24 Hours of Sebring it finished 2nd in the GTS-3 class and 13th overall, followed by the 1998 Premier Petit Le Mans, Road Atlanta finishing 1st in class and 9th overall. This RSR continued to race through 1997, 1998, and a partial 1999 season before the arrival of the new generation Porsche water-cooled cars.

After racing in North America, this RSR returned to Germany in 2003, where premier Porsche experts at Freisinger Motorsport of Karlsruhe, Germany performed an extensive restoration returning the car to the original delivery configuration. After the restoration was completed, this RSR joined a significant private Porsche collection, and since 2013, has been driven sparingly over the past 12 years. In preparation for consignment a fluid service was performed by Axel von Blittersdorff Sports Car Service of Hamburg. This remarkable RSR is backed by a report prepared by marque expert Jürgen Barth confirming the presence of its matching-numbers 6-speed gearbox and a Deutscher Motor Sport Bund car passport offering eligibility to a host of premier historic racing venues including Rennsport, the Rolex Reunion, Velocity Invitational, and the Daytona 24 hour and Sebring 12-hour Classics, revisiting their period achievements at Sebring and Daytona.

General Condition

Today, this Porsche RSR presents in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition throughout. The Weiss (white) finish is smooth and consistent on all panels. The doors, trunk, and hood display excellent body fit including the front and rear bumpers. The gold finish center lock wheels are in excellent condition and currently wear a set of Yokohama Aadvan competition tires fronting drilled and ventilated disc brakes with red Porsche calipers. Among the many exclusive features of the RSR, the dual plane rear spoiler, unique riveted wide profile front and rear fender flares, and the wicked lowered stance combine to deliver one of the most visually memorable profiles in Porsche racing.

The interior reflects the exhaustive weight-saving Porsche demanded leaving just the essential elements needed for race duty. The contoured black cloth Recaro driver’s seat boasts a centered Porsche crest, Sabelt racing harness, and Recaro branding. The simplified door panels, door pull loops, and stock dashboard are in excellent condition and the original Porsche gauges are beautifully preserved with vivid dials and numeric indication fronted by a Momo steering wheel and flanked by the six-speed shift lever positioned behind the small front console. Additional items include a dual-bottle fire suppression system, red safety shutoff and fire handles, and triangulated roll cage.

The engine compartment and front storage compartment are in excellent condition with correct factory finishes reflecting factory components with various consumable soft items replaced as needed during the restoration. The engine is correct and properly maintained, retaining Porsche parts including the factory intake system, competition exhaust, and accessories. The front storage area is essentially stock now outfitted with a production type fuel tank, likely configured this way in preparation for conversion to street use as there is a growing movement to bring these cars into street trim to increase their broader event participation. The underside of the car is beautifully constructed and appears essentially as new. There is no visual evidence of structural compromise to the chassis or any of the major suspension attachment points. Engine and gearbox castings are in excellent condition including the factory matching numbers 6-speed gearbox bearing the original gearbox stamping.

As many drivers and enthusiasts in the Porsche community have found in recent years, a new market opportunity has opened up for those buying RSRs. Enthusiasts and builders have made successful applications for title in lenient US states, adding a passenger's seat, de-tuning the engine mapping, and raising the suspension, to make rowdy street cars. These reversible enhancements result in a near full competition car experience while driving on the street. There are some period drivers, like Cout Wegner and Kelly Collins (formerly having raced this car) who are leading spirited back road runs in rural areas where these cars can truly stretch their legs.

This is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a professionally prepared, documented RSR, featuring impressive factory specifications and documented period racing history. One of just 30 examples built, this exceptional Porsche RSR is ready to deliver on all the performance promises to any Porsche enthusiast who wishes to participate in world-wide vintage racing events or potentially convert this car to street trim.
