1935 Auburn 851 Supercharged Roadster
s/n 33094E, Motor no. GH4309
Cigarette Yellow with Aubergine Leather Interior
The supercharged Auburn Speedster is one of the most iconic (and often replicated) American cars of the interwar period. Its glamorous and streamlined styling, combined with its beautiful construction and art-deco detailing have made it truly timeless. The Speedster body was the lightest and most ostentatious body fitted to the 851, which, in conjunction with the supercharged inline-8, made the car a genuine 100mph piece of equipment.
This particular car is in outstanding restored condition. It runs and shows marvelously and is ready for both concours and tours. It has been certified as a genuine matching-numbers Speedster by the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club, an extremely rigorous and comprehensive process that required verification of originality, a historical review, and inspection and recommendation by a certification team. Also of note is that this car is one of just six right hand drive export chassis cars, because it was originally delivered in the UK. It is also believed to be one of less than ten cars originally fitted with a radio. Its more recent history is interesting as well, having been restored and owned by noted collector Mike Tillson. It scored extremely well in Classic Car Club of America events and remains in stunning condition.
Cosmetically, the car is extraordinarily difficult to fault. The only noticeable indications of wear or use anywhere are on the hard toneau cover where the top contacts it, and one pimple on the cowl. The paint, chrome, lights, and glass are all outstanding. There is a subtle contrasting burgundy coachline, which matches the painted wheels and complements the interior color extremely nicely. There are numerous art deco details such as the font of the `supercharged` script, and of course, those evocative external exhaust pipes.
The interior is equally stunning in both condition and execution. The aubergine upholstery sets off the yellow paintwork beautifully, and is flamboyant without being tacky. The level of detailing is superb, including a plaque certifying that the car was tested to 101.5 mph before being shipped. The overall feel of the interior is marvelously elegant, yet simple and functional too.
The engine compartment and underside are detailed for show. Both are extremely clean and correct, with even the original-type `Auburn` sparkplugs fitted. All ancillaries and details are present and well done, right down to the materials and colors of the fabric insulation on the wires.
Having been completely restored, he car drives like a brand new example. The brakes are effective and balanced. The clutch disengages with the appropriate free play and the gearbox is robust and smooth. The engine pulls strongly and idles quietly.
Any genuine 851 Speedster is a desirable car, but this car in its exceptional condition and with its unique features is a particularly unusual opportunity. The condition speaks for itself, and the car is genuinely ready for both show and tour. The car's correctness and originality are also beyond reproach, with verifiable matching numbers, including the original body. The car also comes with weather equipment, including side curtains.
