Primer with Brown Interior
A development of the prewar 6C 2300 and 2500, this 6C 2500 Super Sport is the ultimate variant of the old style elegant, glamorous, and luxurious Alfa Romeos that were developed under the guidance of Vittorio Jano and Wilfredo Ricart. The specification is accordingly modern, including dual overhead cam engine and independent suspension all round. Alfa Romeo ambitiously raced the 6C 2300 and 2500 following their introduction, amassing an impressive string of victories and podium finishes including 1-2 in the 1937 Mille Miglia, 1-2-3 in the 1937 6 hour Targa Abruzzo at Pescara backed up by another Pescara win in 1938. Successful races continued after the cessation of WWII hostilities, including an overall win in the 1950 Targa Florio.
The most technically potent of several 6C 2500 models was the Super Sport, built on the 2,700mm wheelbase. With three Weber carburetors it gave 110hp even on the low octane fuel available in Europe at the time. The 6C 2500’s relatively stiff frame and 4-wheel independent suspension delivered this power to the road much better than the typically cart-sprung solid axle cars of the day. The supple suspensions were easier on drivers and passengers, important both in preserving a competitor’s alertness at the end of the Mille Miglia and to the owner of a Gran Turismo Alfa at the end of a road trip to Cannes. Their combination of sophisticated engineering, durability, and attractive bodywork has ensured that they are, and have always been, highly sought after by collectors and performance minded enthusiasts. Three variants were built postwar, including the two closed versions, one by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, and one in house by Alfa Romeo.
This particular car, s/n 915734, is a Touring bodied Super Sport coupe on the desirable 2,700mm “short” chassis. It is a solid, strong running example requiring a complete cosmetic restoration. The previous ownership period lasted for some 35 years, and during that time this 6C 2500 shared a stable with a Ferrari 342 Cabriolet, and a 330 GTC, among other important Italian automobiles. This owner acquired the car while working at Jay’s Imports in San Leandro, California, where it had been fitted with a replacement engine, also from the Super Sport series. A second engine block (damaged), is included with the car. A hands-on enthusiast, this long-term owner initiated the restoration in the 1970s, while occasionally driving the car. More recently, Jere Brown has serviced the brakes and rebuilt the water pump. At this time, the car starts easily revs freely, shifts well, and stops effectively.
The car is structurally in very good order, especially in terms of corrosion, thanks to its long-term California ownership. The floors, frame, and body support substructure are all in good condition. The body itself, once stripped, will require some minor metal work to the front valance area, and the adjustment of the panel match at the bottom of the doors, but the balance of the body is in very good shape, and appears to be largely free of filler. Some preparation has been made towards paintwork, but it is likely that the new owner will want to start from a fully disassembled state in order to achieve the standards required today of most collectors.
In addition to being very solid structurally, the car is also quite complete. In place are many difficult to locate or replicate items such as the exterior door handles, window surround trim, ornate interior switchgear, gauges, and factory steering wheel, the Simun heater, fuse box cover, ash trays, window glass, air cleaner housings, mechanical fuel pump, among many other items. Included with the sale, but not currently installed are the sun visors, headliner bows, and the license plate light housing. Extra parts which accompany the car include an extra side mirror, extra cast bumpers (damaged), extra headlights and bezels, an extra engine block and other engine parts, and a small box of various mechanical parts such as distributor caps, which may prove helpful during the restoration. We are aware that the original brake light assemblies are missing.
Currently running, driving, and exceptionally complete, the restoration of this example should prove less expensive and time consuming when compared to starting with fully disassembled or incomplete car. A wonderful, early, coachbuilt Alfa Romeo, once restored, this curvaceous short chassis Super Sport will be an idea entry to many of the world’s most prestigious show and rally events such as the Villa d’Este concours, the Italian Mille, and the California Mille.
