1949 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS SWB 2 Seat Pininfarina Cabriolet
s/n 915.692, Engine no. 923.776
Dark Blue with Spanish Grain Red Leather Interior

A development of the prewar 6C 2300 and 2500, this 6C 2500 Super Sport is the ultimate variant of the old style elegant, glamorous, and luxurious Alfa Romeos that were developed under the guidance of Vittorio Jano and Wifredo Ricart. The specification is accordingly modern, including dual overhead cam engine and independent suspension all round. Their combination of sophisticated engineering, durability, and attractive bodywork has ensured that they are and have always been highly sought after by collectors. Three variants were built postwar, including the two closed versions (one by Touring and one in house by Alfa Romeo), and the Pinin Farina bodied convertible version. The International Register of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 indicates that just 63 6C2500 SS 2 seat (short wheelbase) cabriolets made during the postwar period, making this a very rare find indeed.

This particular car has been recently and comprehensively restored to the highest standards, and its recent awards (including Most Elegant Convertible at Pebble Beach 2008 and Best in Show and Best in Class at The Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance) are a testament to the quality of the work. It is currently fitted with a correct type SS motor, serial number 923776, and was originally delivered on the 15th April 1949 in Paris. The previous owner relocated to New Zealand, taking the car with him. The car was then sent to Upper Classics Ltd in Christchurch, New Zealand where the car underwent a 3 year body-off restoration. This included a comprehensive mechanical rebuild together with extensive body work. In 2005, the owner relocated back to the U.S. bringing the partially completed car with him. Body was in bare metal, and had no upholstery, but was in running condition.

The current owner purchased the car in August 2005, and began planning the completion of the restoration. Maintaining authenticity of the car was paramount, and much time was spent to ensure the car’s correctness and authenticity. The bodywork was finished at the legendary Perfect Reflections, where the body contours and panel gaps were adjusted. Following paint, the owner then completed the assembly of the car, fitting new glass, body rubber, electrical parts, and accessories. The upholstery was then done by Ken Nemanic of Vintage Automobile Upholstery, and the restoration was completed in early 2008. On its first outing, in May of 2008, at the Hillsborough Concours d’ Elegance the car won 1st in Class and Best of Show. The car was then shown in August of 2008 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance, and it won the Glenn Graham Most Elegant Convertible Award.

Cosmetically, the car is in show ready form with as-new paint, brightwork, and canvas top upholstery. The glass, emblems, and lenses- including the audaciously styled headlamps—are all in exceptional condition with virtually no imperfections. The interior is unmarked and beautifully presented with deco styling and factory correct gauges, knobs, and switches throughout. The under dash is detailed and equipped with the correct heater core and fuse box. Likewise, the trunk is restored to match and is complete with the matching spare tire mounted and wheel to a very smart articulating holder.

In keeping with the presentation of the exterior, the engine bay and underside are fastidiously detailed with correct finishes applied where appropriate. The engine and driveline are exceptionally clean and dry—a testament to quality of mechanical work performed. All the corrected identification plates are in place and unaltered.

This example is a spirited joy to pilot. The car starts easily, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly with good power and no smoke. The four speed transmission shifts smoothly and accurately. The chassis is compliant, steering accurate, and suspension tight as one with expect of a comprehensively restored automobile.

As a proven award winner at Pebble Beach, this example can provide the new owner great success and appreciation at regional or international level shows such at Villa d’Este, and the Louis Vuitton concours events across Europe and the US. In addition to this example’s enormous show potential, it is also eligible for nearly all the major tours and events such as the Miglia Mille, and California Mille, among others.
