Description
1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing
s/n 198.05500536
Engine No. 198.9805500548 (Alloy Replacement)
DB 50 White with Black leather
The 300 SL Gullwing is probably the most widely recognized classic car in the world. At the time it was introduced, it represented innovation never before attempted in the motorcar industry, and today, few cars are as iconic.
Finished on July 29th, 1955, and sold new to Mr. Hill of California, this example appears to have remained Stateside (mostly in California) throughout its life. It is presented here in its original DB 50 white, and now with high quality black leather interior. Sometime before 1986, this example was fitted with a factory supplied alloy replacement block, which has been stamped and tagged to match the original engine no. of 5500548. Best described as a casual show car or perfect event car, few 300 SL have such a robust and well sorted feel mechanically.
The body is straight with very good hood, door, and trunk fit. The paint work was a high quality, and shows virtually no flaws. New gasketing was installed all around at the time of the paint work. The chrome is extremely nice throughout, with just very minimal hazing in selected areas. The window glass and lenses are all in good condition, although there is one star in the windshield. This example sits on restored and polished wheels with near new Pirelli P400 tires.
The interior also makes a very strong impression and is highlighted by a desirable flat Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel. The factory gauges remain, mostly in very good unrestored condition. A period Becker radio is fitted below the dash. The seats, door panels, and rockers are trimmed in soft black leather and are in very good condition. The dark grey carpets are of the correct fabric, and are in good condition, save for some light wear to the driver`s foot well area. This example has a black fabric headliner in unmarked condition.
The engine bay is fully detailed and looks beautiful. The correct semi-gloss, and gloss black finished are applied where appropriate. The polished aluminum heat shields are in excellent condition and the cast aluminum intake manifold is unmarked. Complete with often missing window washer bottle, this example is complete and tidy enough to casually show with pride.
Like the engine compartment, the trunk has also been refinished. The underside is sound and straight, and representative of an older restoration. There are no belly pans with this car.
The car drives extremely well. The suspension and steering is tight and responsive. The brakes, clutch, and transmission are all operating as they were designed to.
With this example comes a complete set of original 300 SL luggage, spare wheel and tire, and factory jack.
There are a growing number of tours and rallies throughout Europe and North America for which this car is eligible. With no obvious needs mechanically, and more than presentable cosmetically, this example is a turnkey option for the collector looking to enjoy his new Gullwing on the road.
