Description

1956 Cooper T39 Bobtail s/n CSII/6/56, Eng. no. FWA400-6/6976, Gearbox # ERSA 178803 Light Green Metallic This fantastic Cooper T39 Bobtail has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration to original specifications and is in outstanding mechanical cosmetic and mechanical condition with just one race weekend since restoration. The history of this chassis is well known, with an unbroken chain of ownership dating all the way back to the late 1960`s, with no duplicate serial numbers reported. Richard Neale, president of the Cooper Car Club, cheerfully acknowledges this car as authentic Cooper T39 Bobtail, s/n CSII/6/56. Historic FIA papers have been applied for, and once received, will make this car eligible for nearly every prestigious vintage racing venue on the planet. All the restoration work performed was of very high quality and done by experienced shops well recognized in the Cooper community. The period correct ERSA Citroen gearbox was rebuilt by specialist Sid Hoole, engine by Geoff Griffiths, body and suspension by Tivvy Shenton, and final sorting and assembly by Hoffman Vintage Racing Services in Pennsylvania. As part of the restoration the period correct 1100cc Climax engine was rebuilt, and much of the chassis remanufactured, along with other parts, as the original chassis had deteriorated to a point where it was no longer safe for competition use. Fortunately, this car still wears its original chassis plate with its distinctive original rivets, a rarity amongst Coopers of this era. Mr. Neale, President of the Cooper Car Club, recognizes this as standard restoration practice. ``In our opinion this does not detract from the fact that this car is CSII/6/56 and it is a Cooper Race Car with a continuous history from 1968 to date``. The car was driven by Kurt Hoffman in its one outing after restoration, the Pittsburgh Grand Prix. Hoffman reported that the car handled beautifully and made excellent power. Since the time of restoration the car has been regularly started and driven occasionally. In June of 2006 the compression was tested to confirm the motor was in good health. All readings were between 110-115 lbs. Specific details on the period racing history is not clearly known. It is believed to have been a regular Sports Car Club of America participant in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Eric Loveland bought the car from an SCCA racer in the Minneapolis area in the 1960s, and sold the car to Charles and Lou Wright in the 1980s. Lou sold the car to Dr. Rob Follows of Vancouver in 1992, who sold it to Bob Wade, who sold the car to the current owner in 2006. Cosmetically the car is an outstanding piece with extremely high quality paint over an exceptionally straight body. The chassis, suspension, engine and drive train and all clean and tidy and have a freshly restored look and feel. With this example comes several cans of extra paint to match the body, some original equipment replaced during the restoration including extra brake and suspension parts and an alternator, a new gasket set, and a myriad of other smaller bits and pieces which will surely prove helpful to the new owner. Documentation includes a letter from Richard Neale to support the history of this chassis, a VSCCA logbook, starting instructions, and some of the invoices relating to the restoration. A comparatively inexpensive entry into premier events such as the Monterey Historics, Goodwood Festival of Speed, among others, this freshly restored, well sorted, and aesthetically delightful T39 Bobtail will be both a crowd pleaser and a joy to pilot.
