Description

1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider s/n AR1495*04137*, engine no. AR00551*08050*Dark Blue Metallic with Cream Leather InteriorThe Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.Essentially the Italian take on the classic sports car formula, the cars coupled lovely bodywork by Pininfarina (on open cars) or Bertone (on closed cars) with Alfa Romeo’s sophisticated twin cam engine and a wonderfully lively and entertaining chassis. This particular car is a longtime California example that has seen massive expenditure, approximately $60,000 to bring it to its current state. This has included a completely rebuilt 1750 engine, rebuilt carburetors, new paint, disc brake conversion, transmission rebuild, suspension work, and much other sorting. The mechanical work was carried out primarily by Valtellina Automobili and Larry Buskirk, who built the motor, including new pistons, valves, heavy duty valve springs, guides, water pump, electronic ignition, new wiring harness, new clutch, new brake lines, rebuilt starter, new ring gear, rebuilt generator, and rebuilt carburetors. Additionally, the radiator has been recored, the fuel tank boiled out and re-coated, new exhaust fitted, new Konis and springs fitted, new tie rod ends fitted, the gauges rebuilt, the interior redone, and the car repainted. The bumpers were also rechromed and much of the exterior chrome hardware such as hinges replaced. The driving experience of the car reflects the extensive work it has seen. The engine is very eager. It is well-tuned, produces plenty of power, and sounds aggressive. The gearbox is excellent, with great synchromesh on all gears, including second gear when cold. The disc brakes are a noticeable improvement over the standard drums, and the suspension is taught and sporting without being overly aggressive for street use. Overall, the car is an exciting example that is appreciably improved in every aspect over a standard car, including a Veloce. The car is in good cosmetic condition, making a strong impression but not being so perfect as to cause its new owner to feel guilty about driving it. The body is straight and displays good gaps, although the trunk lid sits high on one side. The paint was done to good driver standards and has the occasional chip, surface imperfection, and some small dents in the trunk lid. There is a pair of holes in the left front fender from where a side mirror was previously affixed. The chrome varies from good to excellent, with very nice essentially unmarked bumpers and some light pitting and other aging on the door handles and windscreen surround. The glass and lights are generally excellent, although there is road wear on the windscreen. All windows appear to be original. The top has been replaced and is excellent. The interior is in very good condition overall, with nicely mellowing leather upholstery which was done to correct patterns and high standards. There is wear on the driver’s seatback from contacting the top. The carpet is plusher than it would have originally been and the car has rubber Alfa Romeo mats. The dashboard is nicely presented with beautifully restored gauges. The chrome strip on the dash shows pitting while the remaining interior chrome is very good. The switches and horn button are in good shape, as is the steering wheel other than a crack in the rim.The engine is purposeful and appears to be well maintained, but is not spotless or highly detailed. The carburetors, which are equipped with velocity stacks, are impressive. The trunk has both a rubber Alfa Romeo mat as well as a carpeted mat and is in excellent shape. This is a great opportunity to acquire a Giulietta Spider that has seen extensive sorting at great expense. It is cosmetically attractive and is a thrill to drive, making it an ideal example to drive and enjoy without the fear of spoiling a show-ready example.
