The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard car, and as is often the case with Italian cars, the later models are more technically developed.
This particular example is a genuine factory 750 series Veloce. It is perhaps the most desirable of the Veloce Spider variants employing the more modern 101 series underpinnings while retaining the highly desirable 750 series short wheel base chassis. While the car comes with its original matching numbers 1300cc engine, it is currently fitted with a more powerful 1600cc Giulia series Alfa engine. It has been further upgraded with a 5-speed Alfa transmission, as is so often the case with the 750 series cars. It is a solid, long time California car, purchased by the current owner from a well known enthusiast and TZ-1 owner. Best described as having good driver cosmetics, and strong mechanicals, this wonderful Giulietta is well suited to the multitude of tour and rally events for which it is eligible.
The paintwork has been redone to nice driver standards over generally straight and solid panels. The chrome, although showing some age in areas, is also straight and complete. The engine bay is not overly detailed, but does boast the often missing cast aluminum airbox correct for the desirable Veloce series cars. The interior is also in keeping with nice driver standards, and is quite original in terms of gauges and switchgear. The black canvas convertible top is in very good condition, which fits and seals well. The windscreen wipers are not currently working, as the under the current ownership period this example has been enjoyed only in fair weather. The car runs and drives well with good power, smooth synchros, and well tuned, taut and sporting suspension.
This example’s structurally solid nature, early build date, attractive color combination, and outstanding specification will make it an appealing purchase for the Alfa enthusiast looking for an inexpensive, event eligible car, with an option to make minor detail improvements during his ownership, or to use and enjoy exactly as it sits.
Included with the sale are an extra set of keys, the original jack, a matching spare wheel with tire and the original 1300cc engine. It is currently registered in California on yellow year of manufacture license plates.
