Description

1959 Porsche 356 A Convertible D s/n. 86077, Engine no. 83449 Silver with Green Leather Interior The Porsche 356 A Convertible D represents a unique development of the legendary Speedster. It retained the cut-down look of the Speedster, which it achieved through its lower windscreen. The D was manufactured with a proper insulated top of extremely high quality, and was fitted glass wind-up windows. As a result it was a much more civilized and usable car in all weather conditions than the Speedster, but much more sporting than the standard model. Today the Convertible D is quite rare and is finally emerging from the shadow of the Speedster. This particular car is an extremely appealing matching numbers example (engine, chassis, and gearbox), and is a genuine `Super` model. It retains its original and striking color combination of silver with a green interior, per a 2006 kardex. The interior was just redone in leather- a show-quality effort that looks absolutely spectacular. This is a very nice, attractive example that retains is original washer bag, tool roll, jack, handbook, and is fitted with the rare and desirable Nardi flat wood steering wheel. This car has been recently repainted in its original fine flake silver (5706). The work was of competent quality and shows extremely well. The door jams are detailed and polished, and much of the rubber gasketing was replaced at the time of the repaint. Other than two or three minor paint flaws from the painting process itself there are no other flaws of any kind in the paint. The body lines are straight, with satisfactory gaps at the hood, doors, and engine lid. There is no visible rust to the underside or within the body. From the inside of the frontal storage area there is evidence to suggest that some repairs were carried out around the headlights. The chrome and aluminum trim is generally excellent, with only very minor pitting occurring in selected areas on the bumper posts, and on the marker light surrounds. There are some imperfections to the aluminum windshield trim. All the correct badging is in place, including the Drauz Karosserie side badge. A new black Hartz cloth top has been fitted over a freshly restored top frame. It is an outstanding looking car, fit to drive or to show on a regional level. The new interior is exquisite with fresh leather seats, door panels, and dash- all in its original color. The interior installation represents outstanding workmanship. New proper German weave carpet was also installed at the time of upholstering, along with fresh black rubber floor mats. The dash appears to be original, and is visually excellent. The gauges are all in very good condition, with excellent chrome bezels, which also appear to be original. All gauges are fully operational. The balance of the interior chrome; door handles and window levers are all quite nice. The total cost of the upholstery work to the interior alone was in excess of $8,000. The overall impression of the interior is that of a new car. The underside is representative of a well cared for original car. There is no evidence of rust or rust repairs. The motor and transaxle are both nicely detailed and appear to have had recent attention, although we have no records for this work. The engine compartment and frontal storage area are both attractive. The engine bay appears to be original with the exception of period Judson Electronic Magneto. The front compartment, complete with window washer bag, has been treated with undercoating and painted gloss black. Recent work mechanical work has been preformed at The Stable (Bay Area Porsche experts) to ensure this car is in event ready form. Within the last 100 miles, a major service and fluid change was completed. A new steering damper was installed, and all four shocks were replaced. The transmission mounts, wheel bearings, steering components were replaced as necessary. With the car comes an original Porsche 356 A owner`s manual, a complete leather tool roll with tools, tonneau cover for the soft top, spare wheel and tire, jack, and the records for the work done by the current owner. Currently the car shows 24,652 miles. The actually mileage is unknown. Only produced in 1959, the 356 A Convertible D is a highly sought after open Porsche of limited production. As a more comfortable, more usable, and many ways more intelligent alternative to the Speedster, the Porsche Convertible D is a rapidly appreciating automobile. A serious buyer for a Convertible D will not be disappointed.
