Description

1959 Porsche 356 A Outlaw Coupe
s/n 106064, Engine no. P*705170*
Black with Saddle Leather

Porsche introduced the A version of the 356 just as it was coming into its own as an independent sports car manufacturer. They had just completed their 10,000th car, and with racing efforts gaining momentum, it was clear that Porsche was a force to be reckoned with. At this time, the street car model line was diversified to include a variety of body styles and engines, with the most potent non-racing engine being the Super, initially in 1500 form, and later in 1600 form. The 356A has an aesthetic purity that has made it among the most sought after early Porsches, while the traditional Porsche values of craftsmanship, engineering, and focus on driving are beautifully articulated in these cars.

This particular example is a superbly crafted and very tasteful Outlaw that was built as a ground-up restoration by Ted Blake. The body lines, panel match, and paintwork are extraordinarily good. The body was media blasted, and a new floor pan, longitudinals, struts, and battery floor were installed at the time of the build, about 2,000 miles ago. Front disc brakes from a 356C were fitted, along with dual brake master cylinders and Koni shocks. The car was lowered and a 19mm front sway bar fitted. A 356C steering column has been retrofitted, and topped with a modern Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel. A 904 temperature/oil pressure replaces the stock one, and a 160 mph speedo has been retrofitted, as has an 8,000 rpm tachometer. All the gauges were rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer. This Outlaw has been converted to 12 volt, with a power source discreetly installed under the dash.

The engine is truly that of a hot rod. From a 912 base, it was bored out to 1920 cc and built up with a Scat crank, Carrillo rods, straight cut gears, 44mm exhaust valves, with the heads and case machined by Competition Engineering. It is fitted with an aluminum oil cooler with full flow 5 quart system with extra oil filter. Carburetion is provided by a set of Webers and the exhaust is by Bursch. The case has additional inboard oil sprayers. The transmission is a rebuilt 741 unit out of a 356C.

The interior is a custom affair by Autos International featuring GT-style seats, and a black dash pad to eliminate windshield glare, and a black headliner. Dynamat has been used in the floors, roof, and rear bulkhead to reduce noise and heat within the cockpit. The frontal storage area features an aluminum racing fuel cell.

Outside, the mirror-finish black paintwork over the epically straight panels is beautifully set off by the aluminum Rudge-style knock-off wheels with new 195/15/55 tires. The package is further refined by over rider-free GT bumpers.

We cannot express enough what a joy this tasteful outlaw is to drive. The clutch, disc brakes, steering, transmission, and gauges are all absolutely dialed in. The ride is firm and free of lean and sway, yet not so stiff or rough as to discourage use on long distance trips. The engine provides the ample power which is usually lacking from 356A series cars, and the 741 transmission provides a much more positive shifting experience. In short, this Outlaw has all the update made during the 356 series, with the beautiful 356A bodylines. With its clean and sleek stance, this car looks like it is going fast even when sitting still. Once completed, the current owner showed this wonderful 356A Outlaw at the Porsche 356 Club’s 2012 North & South meeting in San Luis Obispo, California, where it was awarded the People’s Choice award, confirming we are not the only ones enthusiastic about the quality of this Outlaw!

Included with the sale is a three ring binder with containing pre-restoration and in process photos, photos of the engine being built along with build sheets from Ted Blake, as well as Porsche’s Certificate of Authenticity.
