Description

1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint
s/n AR1493*20366*
Verde Muscio with Tan Interior

The Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With theGiulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.

This particular car is a tastefully upgraded example that looks relatively stock but is equipped with a 1750 cc engine and 5-speed transmission, as well as suspension upgrades. The car was built by Stuart Moss in Portland, Oregon in the late 1990s on a solid Giulietta Sprint base. Duetto seats were fitted along with instruments from a late 101 series Sprint, which were restored by Palo Alto Speedometer. The car has adjustable fron suspension and rear trailing arms from Tom Zat, and the rear differential housing was narrowed and the axle tubes modified to fit 101 Series suspension. A Watts linkage was also fitted. The motor is a stock 1750cc unit with 5-speed transmission. The upholstery material came from Elvizio in Italy and the car has disc brakes all around. Its current owner is a Southern California collector who purchased car in its current form in Oregon. The car has been recently repainted and in recent years, it has been maintained by Anthony at Santo’s Italian Car Service.

Cosmetically, the car makes a great impression with excellent paint over a straight and solid body. The panels fit well and the paintwork was done to very nice standards and shows very little wear or aging, just some surface cracks on the left door. The chrome and trim are excellent throughout and the lights and glass are also very good to excellent. The car has Cibié headlamps. The wheels are in as new condition and are equipped with Vredestien Sprint Classic tires.

The interior is in excellent shape with high quality upholstery and carpets which are more plush than the original materials used in these cars. Both are in excellent condition with minimal evidence of use or age since being installed. The door panels have been trimmed to match the seats and the car appears to have had a new headliner recently installed, which is of the correct material. The dashboard is in very nice condition including the instruments, switches, and controls.

The engine compartment is tidy and attractive and very nice for a car that is regularly driven, although it is not spotlessly detailed. The car is fitted with twin Weber carburetors which coupled with the black finish on the valve cover adds a purposeful sportiness to the engine compartment. The trunk has been fitted with black carpet and there is a fuel cell installed as well.

The car runs and drives well. The engine is well-tuned and tractable rather than being peaky and temperamental like some hot rod motors. The gearing provides sprightly performance while the presence of a 5th gear ensures that highway cruising is accomplished at more reasonable engine speeds than in a 4-speed example. The synchromesh is excellent and the clutch has a wonderfully positive and reassuring engagement that is often missing in Giuliettas. The brakes also have good stopping power and exceptionally firm pedal feel rather than the sponginess that often is present in these cars when they are equipped with drum brakes. The suspension provides a firmer ride and more body control than when these cars are stock, although there is more road noise transmitted to the cabin through the firmer suspension bushes.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a great driving Giulietta Sprint that has been upgraded to provide a more sporting and aggressive driving experience. A cosmetically attractive example that retains a relatively stock appearance, this example would be ideal for the most prestigious events including the California Mille and makes a great event car thanks to its superior weather protection and 5-speed gearbox.
