Dove Grey with Green Plaid Interior
The Citro 2CV or `deux chevaux` (literally translated as two horses for the output of the engine, two taxable French horsepower, which is considerably more in conventional horsepower) is one of the most important cars ever built. The car is a packaging marvel, and very clearly a representation of the `less is more` design ideology. Like the Ford Model T and Volkswagen Beetle, the 2CV literally mobilized entire generations and populations of people, and eventually went on to become a hugely iconic social symbol. It is one of a handful of cars that truly is so much more than a car, but instead represents a particular design ethos, a way of thinking, and today, especially in the United States, they are downright cool to those who appreciate the functional aesthetic and seemingly paradoxical blend of simplicity and carefully thought out design. On one hand, the car appears to be extremely rudimentary with its air-cooled two cylinder engine, fabric roof, and removable hammock-style seats that were also intended to double as picnic seating when removed from the car. However, with front wheel drive, sophisticated independent interconnected coil spring suspension, the car`s role and design features were very carefully considered. Indeed, one of the original design criteria was that a farmer should be able to drive his 2CV across an unploughed field carrying a carton of eggs, without breaking a single one. The car was intended to be a robust, simple, economical, and reliable way to get people into cars, and so their nearest competition was not other cars, but from horses and carts, bicycles, and public transportation.
This particular example was built in 1960 and is thus powered by the 425cc engine, which provides leisurely but appreciable change in scenery. This car is fitted with a special trunk lid to allow a larger luggage capacity, and like all 2CV`s, it also has a full length fabric roof that can be rolled back. It was imported from France in 2004 and is in very nice tidy condition with almost no body corrosion and attractive grey paint. The wheels have been restored and show a little bit of corrosion but are presentable. They are fitted with older tires of the Michelin X type, like any good French car. The front doors are suicide doors and much of the rubber trim has been replaced recently. The top looks brand new and the glass and lights are very good. There are two hairline cracks in one of the taillight lenses, and one of the headlamps does not work.
The interior is marvelously simple and smile-inducing place. The green plaid seat upholstery is very charming and was recently replaced, and the construction of the car is very evident. The condition is very good throughout, with good fabric and rubber trim and mats, and nice paint as well. The speedometer and other gauges are unrestored but still presentable, and the interior is on the whole a very airy and cheerful place.
The engine compartment is unrestored, but is fairly clean and free from leaks. The trunk is very nice with a jack, tire iron, and a nice restored spare wheel. There is no corrosion or evidence of corrosion. The underside reveals some minor rust repairs common to these cars at this age, including some areas of the floor that were removed and new sections welded in.
During their forty-two year production (1948-1990), over five million examples of the 2CV were constructed, and even before production ceased, they had become cult classics. Today, they are truly legendary, capturing the imagination of everyone with their adorable styling, simplicity, and tremendous charm. This example has a California title and registration and is a very cool car in great condition that would make a great in-town runabout, shopping/picnic car, and an extremely safe way to transport cartons of eggs.
