Description

1960 Ferrari 250 GT PF Cabriolet s/n 2039, engine no. 2039 Grigio Metalizzato with Pumpkin Leather and Grey Carpets As prices for long and short wheel base California Spyders soar into the multi-millions, Series II 250 Pinninfarina Cabriolets (built concurrently alongside the California Spyder) have become the last financially accessible open 250 series Ferrari. With just 200 examples built between 1959 and 1962, these open two-seater are of very limited production and are highly sought after, and will prove to be excellent investment pieces accordingly. The mechanical components of the Series II PF Cabriolet were shared with the PF Coupe of which 350 were built. These were the first Ferrari production cars to use the new V12 developed in the racing division, the 128F engine. The major innovation was a revised cylinder head design with outside spark plugs allowing 12 port heads and producing 240 hp in street form. In contrast to the Series I Cabriolets, the Series II had discs in place of drum brakes, and a new four-speed gearbox with overdrive. This particular example has been extensively restored and finished in an extremely pleasing and period typical color combination of metallic grey with grey carpets and pumpkin leather. The car was restored with concourse judging in mind, and is finished with painstaking detail down the correct nuts, washer, and labels. The car looks as if it just rolled out of the factory in Modena and the year was 1960. As part of the restoration work: The engine, transmission, differential, suspension, and brakes were removed from the chassis. The engine was disassembled and short block found to be in excellent order. The crank and rod bearings were inspected and measured and found to be in excellent condition. The cylinder heads were completely rebuilt with new valves, seats, and modified guides to accept valve seals. The timing chains were inspected and adjusted. The generator was rebuilt with new bearings. Both distributors were rebuilt with new points and condensers. The starter was dissembled, cleaned, and tested. The water pump was rebuilt. The carburetors were rebuilt with new gaskets and seals. As the motor was reassembled, a new wiring harness was installed as was a new fuse board with correct tags on the fuse covers. A period correct battery was installed. The fuel pumps and regulators were rebuilt and new OEM yellow hoses were installed throughout the system. New OEM oil lines were also sourced and installed. New water lines were installed, along with a new heater valve, rebuilt heater core, and rebuilt radiator. A new exhaust was fitted with new exhaust hangers. The driveline was also restored. The gearbox was inspected and found to be in very good working order and reassembled with a new rotoflex. The differential was disassembled, and the roller bearing, retainers, and oil seals replaced. The brake master cylinders and booster were rebuilt. New hand brake cables and brake pads were installed. The suspension was installed with all new bushings and new front wheel bearings. All five Borrani wire wheels were rebuilt. The frontal section of the body was lifted from the chassis for repair to the rockers and restoration of the chassis and engine bay. Newer Marchal headlights and buckets were installed. In total, approximately 3,600 hours were spent on the body, chassis, interior, mechanical reconditioning, and parts sourcing. With the restoration now completed, this example is nothing short of stunning. The body is straight, and of course, rust free. The panel match at the hood, truck and doors is excellent. The paint is of high quality, although perhaps one step away from a Pebble Beach style job. The door jams are nicely detailed and painted to match the exterior. All the chrome trim was renewed and is outstanding. The windshield was replaced and is like new, while the balance of the window glass is in well kept original condition. All the Pinninfarnia and Ferrari badges have been refinished and are excellent, as are all the lights and lenses. The car sits on beautifully restored and polished 15X5.5 Borrani wire wheels with new period correct Michelin XVS 155HR15 tires. The interior is trimmed in beautiful pumpkin leather, which is evocative of Italian style in the early 1960s. The seats, console and door panel leather is of extremely high standard, done to original specifications, and is virtually flawless. The carpets are grey to match the exterior and are of extremely high quality. The driver`s and passenger`s foot well areas are protected by slightly darker grey fitted inlays which match the trunk. The dash is trimmed in high quality black leather, and is fresh with none of the sun shrinkage that is common to older restorations. The interior chrome has all been refinished and is beautiful throughout. All the gauges, switches, and knobs (with the possible exception of the cigarette lighter) are the correct type and in excellent condition. The engine bay is restored and fully detailed with concourse judging in mind. All the correct equipment is in place including yellow fuel lines, FIAMM horns, three-point air cleaner housing nuts, and period correct battery. The crackle finish, gloss black, and flat black finishes have been applied where appropriate. The appearance of the engine bay is that of a new car in every way. Likewise, the underside is freshly restored and is perfectly clean. All the components are correctly refinished. Mechanically, the car has a very fresh feel. The electronic fuel pump works as it should, and the car starts easily, sounds and runs strong, with minimal smoke. The brakes are effective, and the clutch works properly. The gearbox is smooth and deliberate both when warn and cold. With this car comes the tool roll with tools, jack, jack bag, Borrani wire wheel spare, very rare factory hard top, and a CD with a photo documentation of the restoration process. We cannot say enough for the freshness and thoroughness of the restoration. Fit to show or to use in events, this open 250 series Ferrari will be sure to please the buyer specifically looking for a body-off restored car.
