1960 Porsche 356B Outlaw Roadster
s/n 87737 Eng. no P*608480*
Green with Black Interior

In 1960, Jerry McHugh, an old time 356 race car guy from Fredrick, Maryland, drove this Porsche 356 off the lot. Between 1960 and 1970, the car was used as a weekend driver for Porsche Club outings, rallies and auto crosses. In 1971, this example was converted to an E production SCCA race car. It has been a front runner E production SCCA car on the West Coast since April 5th 1972 by verification of the log book starting on that date. The owner at that time was Frank Powell.

On November 18th 1972, the log book shows a transfer to James Eakin after 6 races by Frank Powell. These were mostly regional races at Riverside, Holtville, and Willow Springs. November 18th 1972 starts Eakins tenure with a drivers school at Riverside. This log book ends on February 14th 1976 with a national race a t Riverside 23 races later. One April 4th 1976, the next log book begins with a national SCCA race at Willow Springs. During the 12 race schedule, James Eakin was invited to the SCCA nation run-offs at Road Atlanta. James led the entire race until he broke a rocker arm on the 2nd to last lap.

Twelve races later, the car was sold to Dale Hersh with the first entry on January 12th 1977 for a race at Riverside. Dale raced the car another 17 times to finish off this log book and was once again invited to the SCCA national run-offs at Road Atlanta in October 1978. The car was in 3rd place, had a fuel leak, went into the pits and finished 8th overall.

On July 8th 1979, Tom Ohmer purchased the car from Dale Hersh after 29 West Coast E productions races. On July 16th, 1985 the car ran its last SCCA E production race. Tom Ohmer has two entries in that particular log book.

The vintage race era for s/n 87737 started with VARA and a new log book on March 2nd, 1991 with Tom Ohmer at the wheel. Thirteen entries were made on the West Coast and Atlanta based tracks. There are 90 SCCA National or regional entries in the log book, and an additional 10 vintage race entries with VARA have been logged for a total of 100 races logged.

On September 1st 1998, the car was purchased by Steve Schmidt and stored for about a year. On April 15th, 1999, the Porsche was purchased by Buddy Cone of Venice, California and moved to Parts Obsolete in McMinnville, Oregon. On July 25th 2000, it was then purchased by Kyle Weiner of Lake Oswego, Oregon and underwent a complete restoration by racing Porsche specialists Gary and Rod Emory of Emory Motorsports.
The first log book after the restoration begins on April 19th 2001 in Seattle, Washington with SOVERN. Since that time, the car has been raced all over the West Coast with SOVERN, HMSA, CSRG, and SCCA.

In 2006, this car took third-place at Elkhart Lake in the Road America International Challenge car Concourse d’Elegance, confirming the outstanding cosmetic presentation of this Porsche. The car also holds a lap record for a Porsche 356 with the time of 2:12.8 at Thunderhill Raceway.

During the restoration, the brakes were changed from “B” drum brakes to “C” Disc brakes and are fitted with KFP race pads and dual-circuit master cylinder. The engine is a freshly rebuilt Gamroth sprint motor which has zero hours. The electrical system was also changed from a 6 volt to a 12 volt set up, with a high torque starter and electric tachometer. The suspension features Wright dropped spindles with 4 degrees of negative camber, Skirmants Camber regulator, and Koni shocks. This car is fitted with 6.5X 15 Minilite wheels with Yokohama A038 tires. A fire system and a fuel safe fuel cell were also installed as well as a short shifter. Accompanying the sale of this car are four additional Minilite wheels and Yokohama tires, and a binder with log books, historical papers and receipts.
