Description

1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint
s/n AR149324709, engine no. AR00102 17231
White with Two Tone Blue and Grey Interior

The Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.

This particular car is a European market example that came from Italy approximately 15 years ago. Since then, it has been enthusiastically owned by Alfa Romeo collectors and regularly maintained. It has had considerable recent work including coated exhaust manifold, valve adjustment, clutch adjustment, tighten timing chain, replace distributor, tune engine, rejet Weber carburetor, replate steel parts and fasteners under the hood, replace headlight flasher relay, replace fuel sender, boil and coat fuel tank, calibrate and clean gauges, new tires, miscellaneous electrical fixes, and install backup electric fuel pump. Additionally, all fluids were changed including transmission, differential, and engine oil, brake fluid, and coolant. It is an authentically presented, wholesome, and honest example that runs, drives, and looks great.

Cosmetically, the car is in very nice driver condition with a straight body displaying good panel fit and gaps. The doors fit very well while the trunk and hood display good fit. There two or three superficial bubbles in the bottom of the passenger’s door, smaller than a pencil eraser. The paintwork was nicely done and is in very good shape with minimal wear or deterioration, while the chrome is in very good to excellent condition throughout. The wheels are correctly finished and in good shape and they wear recent Vredestein tires. The lights and glass are in good condition with some wiper marks to the windscreen and hairline cracks to the tail light lenses but no other issues of significance.

The interior was correctly retrimmed and looks smart in its contrasting blue and grey color combination. The upholstery, door panels, and headliner are in excellent condition. The carpets are in similarly nice condition. The gauges are in unusually nice condition, with none of the yellowing that typically affects these instruments. The chrome appears to be unrestored and is in good condition considering this, though certain areas show some aging to the finish. The interior appears essentially stock other than the fitment of a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. There is no radio although the dashboard has provisions for one.

The engine compartment is very clean and nicely presented, with tidy engine and factory airbox. The valve cover has been wrinkle painted and is attractive and the windscreen washer bag is still in place. The engine itself is tidy and nicely presented while the engine bay has not been restored and is solid but not freshly redone. The trunk appears as it should with sound structural components, spare tire, jack, and carpet which appears to have been recently replaced. The undercarriage is exceptionally nice with superb original floor pans and rockers. The rocker seams are crisp and arrow straight and the underside of the car makes a very strong impression because of its originality and integrity.

The car runs and drives very well. The engine starts easily and is well-tuned, pulling as it should, while the gearbox has very good synchromesh. The clutch operates positively and the brakes are effective and even in their operation. Overall the car is a pleasure to drive, and has a pleasing coherence and amusement factor that reminds why these cars are so sought after.

This is a structurally exemplary and wonderfully unmolested Giulietta Sprint that is presented very much as it would have been new. It is freshly serviced and finished in a subtle color period combination. It has no modifications: no 1400 kit, no lowered suspension, no alloy wheels, no oversized tires, and no 5-speed conversion. It is instead and extremely wholesome and pleasingly honest car that runs and drives great and represents an exceptional find.
