Description

1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Zagato “Coda Tronca”
s/n AR10126*100184*
Red with Black Interior

The Sprint Zagato is the ultimate sporting development of Alfa Romeo’s legendary Giulietta. Featuring lightweight bodywork by Zagato and specially tuned engines, the cars were very successful and surprisingly fast, topping 120mph on under 1.3 liters. Lighter than any other variant of the Giulietta, the SZ also had more power thanks to its high compression engine, tighter tolerances, more aggressive cams, and careful tuning. The cars were quite expensive owing to the 300 hours necessary to build the bodies by Zagato, this after receiving the chassis from Alfa Romeo. A few more than 200 examples were built, of which the last 44 were long tail “Coda Tronca” example available here. These cars featured more aerodynamic bodies with lower roofs and long tails with Kamm treatment. They also have front disc brakes.

This particular car was completed in March of 1962 and sold new by Alfa Romeo Lugano in Southern Switzerland. It was restored in Italy in the early 1990’s, including much mechanical work by Conrero encompassing most major systems, including engine, suspension, gearbox, and brakes. The Conrero engine was tuned to produce 135hp, or over 100hp per liter! Receipts for the restoration are included, and there are also photos included of the restorative work being performed.

The car makes a strong impression overall. The paint was well done and remains presentable with a handful of minor blemishes from use and age. The body is straight and solid, and the trim is in very good shape. The wheels are excellent, and the lights and lamps are very good as well, including the Carello headlamps. The glass is good though the front windscreen has a small area of delamination.

The interior very attractive as well and has a nice even patina. The dashboard is excellent and the instruments are in good shape, with a bit of fading. The upholstery is in good shape, with only light wear in the form of some scuffing. The steering wheel is excellent as are the various switches and controls.

The engine compartment is very clean and tidy. Its feel is purposeful and is consistent with the rest of the car’s condition. The Webers have evocative velocity stacks, and the black wrinkle finish on the valve cover is attractive.

This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire the ultimate Giulietta. A pleasure to drive, the SZ II is capable, nimble, and represents the fastest, rarest, and most exotic development of the Giulietta. This example is in the perfect shape to use and enjoy, and has been capably set up and maintained to ensure that it is ready to use and enjoy.
