Description
1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce Spiders/n AR170812, engine no. AR00106 02698White with Red InteriorThe Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard cars. This particular car is believed to have been sold new in Monterey, California and is a black plate California car which the current owner purchased in 1982. The owner prior to that had owned it for many years along with many other Alfas and believed he purchased it new but could not recall for certain. Regardless, the car has had few long term owners and has always been in California’s mild climate. A matching numbers example according to the Fusi book, this car was comprehensively restored from 1994 to 1996 by Conrad Stevenson, the highly regarded Alfa Romeo specialist in Berkeley, California. The car was completely disassembled and the body repainted. The drivetrain, brakes, suspension, interior, and exterior were restored as necessary. The engine had previously been rebuilt, reportedly to a 1450cc displacement and during the restoration, the cylinder head was rebuilt with machine work by Norman Racing. New cams, valves, springs, and guides were included in the head rebuild. The engine was resealed with new gaskets, crank seals, and the carburetors were rebuilt as well. The suspension and brakes were rebuilt, with new bushings, new Koni shock absorbers, new springs, rebuilt wheel cylinders, rebuilt master cylinder, relined brakes, and new brake lines. Inside the car, the instruments were restored and have none of the yellowing that often afflicts these cars, and new upholstery, carpets, and rubber floor mats fitted. Sound insulation was added, the seat sliders restored, and a new top and drape were also fitted. The chrome was restored, new weather stripping fitted, and the car repainted in its entirety in its original color. The car showed 72,134 miles at the time of restoration and has covered just 1300 miles since. The car remains in very nice condition following its restoration and it is clear that it has been carefully stored and used sparingly since. The body is excellent, and the owner reports that it has never been rusty. The doors fit and operate superbly and the front and rear lids operate well with satisfactory fit. The paintwork was done to very good standards and remains nearly unmarked. The chrome is very good, with light pitting and a few surface imperfections but strong overall presentation. The windscreen was not replaced at the time of restoration and it appears that it may be original, with some road wear but no major damage. The wheels and hubcaps are in nice condition and the car wears period Michelin ZX tires. The interior has been beautifully and correctly restored, with superb upholstery to the seats and door panels. The carpet has been renewed and new correct rubber floor mats fitted. The dashboard is excellent, with beautifully restored early type instruments. The switches and steering wheel appear original and are excellent considering this, but not quite faultless. The horn button plastic is unusually nice and the steering wheel is free of cracks. The correct Veloce instrumentation is in place, including tachometer that starts at 2000rpm and 140mph speedometer. The engine compartment is authentic and correct in appearance. It is tidy but not detailed to show standards although the attention to detail and correctness of the restoration is high, with correctly silk-screened airbox, correct Veloce intake plenum and plumbing, correctly labeled brake reservoir, and correct windscreen washer fluid bag. The carburetors are Weber 40DCOE2 units, serial numbers 8865 and 8795, and the head casting number is 10100 01500 01. The trunk was restored to the same high standards as the rest of the car and has a correct new rubber floor mat. The car comes with factory jack mounted next to the spare tire.Giulietta Veloces are coming into their own as collector cars. Not only are the beautiful and technically interesting, but they are a pleasure to drive, which is one reason they are so popular on events. Indeed, these cars often share garage space with top tier classics like Ferrari 275’s or Mercedes Gullwings as a lower-stakes but still very enjoyable car to use and enjoy. This particular car represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a genuine Giulietta Veloce Spider that is in excellent restored condition. The car has exceptional provenance and integrity, with very long term California ownership and few owners. It was never rusty and is an exceptionally original and authentic example. It was restored by one of the best in the business and comes with invoices from the restoration as well as original parts book and miscellaneous other books.
