1962 Ferrari 250GTE 2+2
s/n 3523
Silver Metallic with Apricot Leather
The Ferrari 250GTE is fast shedding its reputation as an affordable 3-litre 12-cylinder Ferrari. Like all Ferraris from the 50`s to the 70`s, they are enjoying tremendous appreciation, and this car represents an opportunity to acquire an honest and well-maintained example that is ready to enjoy. Over the years, GTEs have become increasingly rare as many have been cannibalized for parts for replicas and for other models.
This car was sold new in Switzerland, but has spent many years in California and Nevada. The current owner purchased the car from a gentleman in Livermore California in 1989. Before he purchased it, the front suspension and brakes had been rebuilt and during his ownership, the distributors and carburetors have been rebuilt. The valves have also been adjusted and the plug leads replaced.
The car was repainted in the late 1980s in a color that is similar to original. It is likely a bit more metallic than the original paint, and remains presentable and attractive. The panel gaps are consistent throughout, with the door fit being especially nice. The chrome is generally excellent, and significant re-plating has been performed. The car is fitted with correct and rare Marchal headlights and driving lights, which are generally presentable, but the right fog light has a crack that has been repaired. The correct Marchal reversing light is also present, and is in as-new condition. All four Borrani wire wheels are in excellent shape. The glass is good, though the windscreen has moderate pitting and one chip of significance.
The interior is largely original and remains in excellent condition, with just the right amount of patina. It was originally red, and has been redyed to its present color many years ago. The seats have normal creasing but no tears or holes. The stitching is coming apart on small sections of the rear seats. The dashboard is excellent with no shrinkage or fading to the leather. The interior chrome is extremely nice as is the steering wheel. The headliner is intact and generally presentable and the carpets are excellent.
The engine compartment is very well kept and correct. The three-eared air cleaner wing nuts are still present and correct-type yellow plug leads are also installed. The engine compartment is generally very clean and makes a great impression. The trunk is also extremely nice, showing no significant shortcomings. The underside is free of any obvious rust and shows evidence of proper care. The exhaust system is the correct Ansa type and appears to have very little mileage on it.
The car drives extremely nicely. The motor sounds and runs strong with very minimal smoke and excellent oil pressure. It is likely that one of the valve covers is leaking slightly, and a faint odor of oil that can be detected inside the car. The carburetors are properly adjusted and synchronized. The transmission works correctly, and the 2nd gear synchro, is very good, both warm and cold. The overdrive also works correctly. The brakes are effective and do not cause any pulling. The suspension is tight and the shocks compliant.
This car is an honest and straight example that benefited from the stable climate of the Western United States. It has been properly looked after by its long-term owners and comes with various supporting documents, including an ORIGINAL owner`s handbook, various literature and receipts. It also comes with several boxes of spares, and the knock-off hammer and wrench. It is rare to find such an unmolested example of the 250GTE and an excellent opportunity to capitalize on what Sports Car Market declares to be an annual appreciation of 31%.
