Description

1962 Lotus Elite Series II
s/n PXEZB1387, Engine no. FEW 400-15 8225
Light Blue with Black Interior

Like all Lotus cars from the Chapman era, the Elite is a technological marvel. Employing an almost entirely fiberglass monocoque chassis body unit, rack and pinion steering, disc brakes all around, and Lotus’ usually sophisticated suspension design, the car was and remains a highly capable driver’s car. Its fiberglass construction and diminutive dimensions made for a light weight of about 1,300 pounds, yet the torsional rigidity of the platform is remarkable. The aerodynamic bodywork and mostly covered underside contributed to a coefficient drag of just .29, a remarkable figure, even 50 years later. The car proved to be highly successful in competition, including six class wins in six years at Le Mans (where the car was reported to make 20mpg!).

This particular car is a later production Series II Bristol bodied car fitted with the desirable twin Weber carburetor setup and supplied from the factory with wire wheels and a 4-speed transmission derived from a MG A.

This example displays excellent “driver” quality paintwork over a sound, straight body. The brightwork and emblems are straight and complete, while showing some weathering. The window glass is excellent; all thought the driver’s side window is missing its frame. The car is still fitted with Lucas PL series headlamps and sits on nicely painted wire wheels with period typical tires.

The interior presents very well with a beautiful wood wheel, backed by the factory gauges, is in very nice unrestored condition. The dash top is painted flat black. The carpets are in very good condition with no noticeable flaws, and the seat and door panel upholstery are equally nice. The trunk appears to have been re-done at the same time as the interior with matching upholstery.

The engine bay is exceptionally dry, tidy and representative of a well cared for and sorted automobile. The Weber carburetor installation was done in a very professional manner complete with cold air intake through the driver’s side inner fender well. The engine in this example is the correct Coventry Climax unit, but is non-matching. The underside is dry and well detailed showing evidence of the restoration and mechanical work performed.

The light and agile nature of the Lotus Elite makes this a very gratifying car to pilot. The transmission, brakes, and suspension are all operating as intended by Mr. Chapman himself. The engine pulls strong with no smoke and a lively exhaust note.

Accompanying this car is the scissor jack, and spare wheel with tire. Eligible for a growing number of historic rally and track events, these icons of simplicity are an infinitely usable example of automotive and engineering artwork.
