Description

1962 Porsche 356B T-6 Super 90 Cabriolet
s/n 156786, Engine no. 805394
Heron Grey with Red Leather

Introduced to replace the 356A in 1959, the 356B brought new levels of civilization and refinement to Porsche’s increasingly popular and capable sports car line. While the A and C models of the 356 have traditionally attracted the most attention from mainstream collectors, the 356B is an underappreciated and comparatively affordable avenue into classic Porsche ownership. 1962 marked the introduction of the T6 body, with its larger trunk opening, external fuel filler with door, and twin grille engine lid. As always, the cars incorporated thoughtful and functional design, along with the tried and true Porsche dogmas of high quality, value, reliability, and mechanical robustness.

This particular cabriolet is one of the rare late production T-6 bodied examples. Perhaps more importantly, is a factory delivered matching numbers Super 90 specification car, of which very few were produced. The Super 90 series cars had special components to include a 6,000 rpm tachometer, aluminum pistons and liners, and a transverse camber compensator for the rear suspension. As per the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this example was supplied new in the Heron Grey color it currently wears, and equipped with ventilated chrome wheels, a dimmable rear view mirror, two arm rests, an electric antenna, and headrests, equipment that it retains today for the most part.

The car has seen considerable restoration works by Porsche experts in Northern California. The restoration was both cosmetic and mechanical, and included rebuilds of the engine and transmission. Just 160 miles have been covered since completion. New, fresh, and unmarked paint has just been applied. The body displays reasonably regular gaps and good shut lines. The underside was included in the restoration works with the installation of new floors, battery box, and longitudinals. The front storage compartment retains its original lid with the serial number stamping. A new canvas top with correct insulation liner was installed over a freshly restored top frame. The car sits on beautiful chrome wheels shod with new tires.

The interior is beautifully presented with soft and supple red leather stitched in the correct fashion, seats featuring headrests, restored instruments by Palo Alto Speedometer, and the correct black steering wheel. Thankfully, a factory Porsche radio blank-off plate is in place, retaining the original radio opening hole. Very smart grey colored correct square weave carpets are mated with new black rubber floor mats, also of the correct type.

The engine bay is also restored and detailed with correct Knecht air filter housings, and a correct oil filter housing. Original style decals have been sourced and installed on the various visible sundries. This car features an easy to replace in-line fuel filter. The front storage compartment is also restored, and features the date code matching spare chrome wheel.

The car runs and drives like a freshly restored example. The wipers, headlights, indicators, horns, high beams, and instruments are all working. The engine makes good power, and revs quickly as a true Super 90 should. The transmission shifts smoothly and has a positive, robust feel that distinguishes the B from the 356 A. The brakes are effective, with the slightest bit of run out in the drums.

The Super 90 variant of the 356B T-6 is indeed a rare find in open air form, especially with its original matching numbers engine. Restored it its original exterior color and retaining the rare headrests, arm rests, and vented chrome wheel options, this example is very much as it roll out of the factory in 1963, and fifty three years later, it is ready for Spring and Summer driving!
