Description
1963 Ferrari 250 GTE
s/n 4047
Dark Red with Black Interior
Owned for many years by Wayne Sparling, director of Ferrari`s North American Racing Team (N.A.R.T.), this matching numbers late production car is equipped with several features not found on most GTEs. It was released from the factory with a special hood scoop and unique ribbed plastic steering wheel. The license plate bracket is inset into the rear bumper rather than mounted on the trunk lid, and special three-gill side vents emulate the later 330 GTC model.
This is an exceptionally straight mechanically good example in basic `driver` condition. It has been repainted some years ago in what appears to be its original dark red. Today, the paint shows moderate patina appropriate for its age. The exceptionally straight body panels and good gaps throughout suggest that this car has enjoyed an accident free history. The chrome is fair throughout with moderate pitting and peeling in selected areas on the bumpers and gauge bezels. The car sits of very nice aluminum Borrani wire wheel with period typical Pirelli Cinturato tires.
The interior is also representative of a basic `driver`. All the correct factory gauges and knobs are present and in good original condition. The seats and door panels have been reupholstered in black vinyl. The headliner is original and free of any tears of sagging, but shows moderate discoloration. The carpets are fair. This example has been fitted with A/C, which blows, but not very cold.
The engine bay is complete with correct air cleaner, battery hold down, water bag, and header heat shielding. The condition again is consistent with a very useable driver. Like the engine bay, the underside is complete and stock and representative of an older car with no history of damage. Minor rust repair is evident under the left rear seat bucket. The trunk is mostly original with the floor carpeting having been replaced with correct fabric.
The car drives well with excellent second gear synchro, good brakes, and compliant suspension. The engine sounds and runs strong with good oil pressure, but, as is the case with many GTEs, it does smoke. The current owner rebuilt the brake booster and calipers less than 1,000 miles ago.
With the car comes an original August of 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE Road and Track road test, and the correct and very nice Borrani spare wheel with tire.
Less than a thousand 250 GTEs were built between 1960 and 1963. As a late production car with several unique features, this example should appeal those looking for an inexpensive early Ferrari to capitalize on the current upswing in the market for these cars while having a fun toy to tinker with and drive on weekends.
