1964 Elva Courier Mk. IV

s/n E 1158

Metallic Blue with Black Interior

Production of the Elva Courier was announced in 1958, and completed in 1967. All the Couriers were built with tubular steel chassis and a lightweight and sleek fiberglass body. The MGB based Mk. IV was the most advanced and powerful of the production series, equipped with a torquey 1800cc power plant, independent rear suspension, and disc brakes all the way around. The Mk. IV was also the only member of the production line fitted with MGB roll up side windows. This specific example is believed to be one of just two cars fitted from the factory with overdrive, making it among the most well equipped of any Elva Courier produced. Today the Couriers are popular in historic racing groups all over the country as they offer a mechanically simplistic and economically feasible package while remaining competitive in their respective classes.

We have discussed the car with several of the previous owners. Built by Peter Agg`s Trojan Limited (the same company responsible for constructing the wildly successful McLaren M6 and M8 customer Can Am cars, among others) this example was delivered new to Carl Haas of Newman-Haas Indycar fame. Haas sold the car to a Fred Opert, who intern sold it to Roy Weidman who used the car as a daily driver (pending good weather), while occasionally racing it. Roy sold the car, and then about 15 years later, was reunited with it-which was now in a state of mild disrepair. Roy repaired some rust damage and reinforced some of the chassis, replaced the floors, installed the roll bar, and prepared the car for vintage racing. Roy`s goal was race the car at the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association`s 12 hours of Sebring support race, which he realized in March of 2008. Roy reports driving the car both to and from the event, which alone is a testament to the car`s dual use format.

Today the car is best described as having period typical, functional racecar cosmetics. The car has not been unnecessarily beautified, but makes a strong impression nonetheless. The chrome and lenses are generally good, while the paint and upholstery are average. The car sits on newer Minilite/knock-off style wheels. The engine bay is quite clean and appears mechanically sound and tidy.

According to the previous owner, the engine has about forty hours on a rebuild that included bearing, rings, a mild performance cam, and a new clutch. At this time the car runs and drives and is more or less in the same trim that it completed the March 2008 Sebring weekend in.

This car comes with a certificate of title from the State of Virginia, a current SVRA log book for historic racing, a glass windshield with posts and soft top frame for street use. Eligible for vintage racing with CSRG, SCCA Vintage, HMSA, General Racing, and SVRA, among other major groups, this Mk. IV could potentially serves its new owner as both an enthusiast`s weekend road car, and a vintage racing mount. Few cars of this era can boast the value to performance ratio which this lovely, late production Courier Roadster does.
