1964 Porsche 356 SC Coupe
s/n 128551 engine no. 811100
Champagne Yellow with Black Interior
Ferdinand Porsche’s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine power output more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented huge advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. The 356C was available in both coupe and cabriolet form, each with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the complicated four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.
This particular car is a lovely restored matching numbers example of the desirable 356 SC Coupe. Like all 356 C’s, the car is equipped with disc brakes, and this example also has a number of upgrades including Moto Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel and K&N air filters. The car also has European headlamps and a lowered ride height. The restoration was performed about 12 years ago, and is holding up well.
Cosmetically, the car is in very nice shape and its restoration has a fresh appearance that belies the fact that it was done some years ago. Externally, the car shows exceptionally good gaps and fit, and very straight panels as well. Close inspection does reveal evidence of bodywork at the front of the car, as is often the case with the vulnerable fronts of these cars. The paintwork was done to high standards and shows minimal blemishes and wear, just a few small chips on the front of the car. The chrome varies from very good on the window trims to excellent on the bumpers and headlight rims. The car is equipped with metal side trim, a factory option. The desirable European headlamps are in excellent shape, as are the remaining lights and glazing. The wheels have just been refinished, and the hub caps are excellent. The tires are also brand new.
The interior is also very nice. The leather upholstery is very nice, with only very light wear, while the carpets are of the correct square weave type and are excellent. The car has coco over mats as well. The dashboard, switches, and instruments are very nice as well, as is the wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel. The headliner is also excellent.
The engine compartment and trunk both show nicely and are quite tidy. The engine shows some detailing on most of the painted components and is clean. There are high performance K&N air filters on the correct Solex carburetors. The trunk retains its plastic tray and the leather strap for the spare tire.
The car is a very nice driving example. The engine runs well with good power and no smoke, and is well tuned, though it may benefit from accelerator pump rebuilds in the future. The chassis is solid and taut, and the lowered ride height gives the car an enjoyable agility and dynamic responsiveness. The gearbox is good and shifts smoothly, while the brakes work effectively and pull the car up evenly.
This is a great opportunity to acquire a sparkling driver 356SC with a number of tasteful upgrades. The stance is very purposeful, and the car runs and drives very nicely. It looks great as well, and consequently, this car would be ideal for events and touring. It had a fluid service, general checkover, and valve adjustment in September 2010, and was found to be in very good order. It comes with spare keys and reproduction owner’s manual.
