Description

1964 Porsche 356 SC Coupe
s/n 130275 engine no. 812347
Red with Black Interior

Ferdinand Porsche’s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine power output more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented significant advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. The 356C was available in both coupe and cabriolet form, each with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the complicated and exotic Carrera four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.

This particular car is a great driving genuine SC. The car’s current owner has had it for 13 years, having purchased it from a seller in Washington State. The car has been in the San Francisco Bay Area during that period and has been consistently maintained with much new work including rebuilt braking system, new shifter bushings, fitting new Weber carburetors (original Solexes included), routine fluid changes, and replacing the ignition points, distributor cap, and rotor. The car comes with a few extra parts including rear bumper overriders, Solex carburetors, and original muffler. The car also comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche. The numbers on the timing case and transmission case indicate that this is a matching numbers example, although the remainder of the engine has no stamps on it.

The car is generally sound, and presentable although not recently restored. The car was originally silver, but was repainted red many years ago. The body is straight and generally solid throughout, with good to excellent panel fit. The paint is showing some age, with fading and chips in evidence, although there is no visible corrosion on the top side of the car beyond a small bubble (smaller than a pencil eraser) on the left front fender. The chrome is generally good, other than on the side window trims, which are showing pitting. The chrome wheels are very nice, as are the hubcaps, which have color crests, both of which are options with which this car was originally delivered, according to the Certificate of Authenticity. The glass and lights are in good shape other than the front windscreen, which has some chips. The headlights are desirable and more effective Cibié units.

The interior is correctly presented and in good overall condition. The upholstery is correct in appearance and in excellent shape other than a split in the seam in the bottom of the driver’s seat. The dashboard and dash top are in excellent shape, as are the instruments, other than some clouding to the glass. The headliner is correct and largely intact, although there are a few holes in it. The horn button is excellent and the door panels and rear parcel shelf are in very good condition. The car is fitted with optional headrests and correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio.

The engine compartment is tidy, nicely detailed, and quite clean. Many of the correct details are still in place such as the oil filter decal and fan shroud valve clearance decal. The Weber carburetors wear K&N air filters. The trunk is correct in appearance, with original plastic liner tray and spare wheel with leather retaining strap. A tool roll with tools is also present.

The undercarriage is fundamentally sound, although the battery box was replaced many years ago and now has a hole in it. The trunk floor pan appears to have been replaced in the past and is sound, while the floor pans and longitudinals appear to be in good shape at the present time, although some repair work appears to have been done in the past.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a wonderful-running genuine 356 SC with good options. The car has been continuously maintained by its current owner of 13 years and is a great car to gradually improve while driving and enjoying it. It comes with tools, service records and a few spare parts.
