1964 Porsche 356SC Coupe
s/n 127745, Engine No. 820482
Ruby Red with Butterscotch Leather Interior
The final iteration of Porsche’s first production car, the 356 C was the most developed variant of the model that defined Porsche’s early years, both on the track and off. Incorporating the revisions from the T6 body introduced halfway through 356 B production, the C model was further differentiated by the addition of disc brakes, more powerful base engines, and minor interior revisions. The highest spec version of the 356C was the SC, replacing the Super 90. The SC had 20hp more than the C thanks to its higher compression ratio, reworked cylinder heads, larger valves (sodium-filled on the exhaust side), alloy cylinders, and Solex rather than Zenith carburetors. The cars benefitted from the continuous development that occurred between the model’s 1948 introduction and the production of the C, which lasted just two model years and remain among the most desirable 356 variants.
According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this early production Reutter Coupe was produced December 11, 1963, finished in color code 6404 light ivory and trimmed in black leatherette with corduroy inserts. Delivered with Ventilated Chrome Wheels and Dunlop tires, the car retains both the original engine and transmission, also verified by the Porsche CoA. The current owner purchased the car in 2013, a few months after well-known Porsche 356 expert Tom Scott of Colorado had just completed a bare metal restoration and engine rebuild on the car. Prior to his purchase, the current owner had the car leak down tested and compression tested with all numbers positively reported back. The car was restored with foglamps, front seat headrests, Leitz luggage rack, and a Blaupunkt radio and refinished with in beautiful ruby red with butterscotch leather interior.
As shown by copious restoration records, the engine was comprehensively rebuilt, the Euro heat exchangers were rebuilt and powder coated, and a new Dansk muffler installed. New engine tin was installed, along with new engine soundproofing, a new wiring harness, and a new throttle coupling. The brakes were properly redone including new soft lines and a new master cylinder. All bushings were replaced along with Boge shock absorbers (the previously mounted shocks have been retained and are included). New Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, a new Optima Gel 6V battery, a reconditioned 022 Vintage Werks distributor, and Vic Skirmants valve cover gaskets were also installed. Among the many outsourced services performed, Palo Alto Speedometer rebuilt the speedometer, and key expert Tony Euganeo rebuilt all keys including the working transmission lock. New shift bushings and steering coupler were installed and adjusted, a new Precision Matters sump pump was installed (retaining the original as well), a Leoni starter relay, new starter, Klasse 356 auxiliary fuel pump, and new ground straps were also installed. The current owner, a Porsche enthusiast and capable mechanic, has serviced the car as needed including recent valve adjustments, oil changes, and minor service work by Tom Amon of Mobile Works West in California.
Today this handsome 356SC Coupe presents very nicely with recently applied paint done to a high quality driver level, displaying a glossy, consistent finish. The doors shut tightly and fit well, as do the hood and engine lid. The quality of the chrome, trim, and emblems is very nice overall with only light aging in selected areas. Other than a few minor pits on the windshield, the glass and lenses are also of high quality and very nicely finished, showing excellent fit and properly fitting rubber gaskets and weatherstripping. All four date stamped ventilated chrome wheels and spare wheel are beautifully finished, with dates that correspond to the period the car was built. The purposeful stance, fog lamps, and luggage rack create an individualized look with good attention to detail.
The interior is displays handsome finishes and high quality materials. The leather seats have been correctly restored with matching headrests, and the carpets are high quality correct square weave material with correct rubber centers and a set of Coco mats as well. The headliner is in beautiful condition and was properly installed. The door panels, rear side panels, and rear firewall upholstery present very cohesively showing excellent fit and detailing, including leather luggage straps. The dashboard is nicely finished in matching red paint and nicely upholstered dash pad. The instruments are also very nicely done showing good color and contrast in the dial faces and clear glass. Along with the working clock and Blaupunkt radio, the switches, knobs, and handles all function smoothly. A very nicely polished aluminum and black factory steering wheel (with leather rim cover) with shiny black and gold Porsche crested center emblem quintessentially finishes the purposeful interior.
Under the hood, the engine compartment and engine have been thoughtfully restored and nicely detailed. The rebuilt engine has been updated with Weber carburetors to enhance performance. Proper factory decals, hoses, and correct engine insulation all contribute to the otherwise factory appearance of the engine compartment. The front storage area is finished in a combination of original materials and restored components, attractively presented though not quite as highly detailed as the engine compartment. At some point in the history of the car, a portion of the driver’s side nose clip was repaired. Close inspection nof the front storage area reveals some evidence of metal work. The underside reveals a sound floor and solid body with care given to the suspension and underside engine components during restoration. During the past, repairs have been performed to the trunk floor, rear seat pans and rear jacking areas.
Driving this car, one is reminded of the excellent steering and cornering capabilities disc brake 356 SCs are known for. With the Weber carburetors, the rebuilt SC engine is lively, displaying good power delivery and carburetion. The gearbox shifts well, with good linkage and synchromesh. Braking is excellent, with a nice linear pedal and symmetrical operation. Suspension is firm and compliant when cornering, while road manners on the highway are smooth and solid as one might expect from a car having been treated to as much thoughtful restoration and sorting as this one has enjoyed in recent years.
Included with the sale is an original owner’s manual, the matching spare slotted chrome wheel (date code November 1963), original jack and tool roll with tools, Mesko tire pressure gauge with case, and miscellaneous spare parts. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and records are also included with the car. This handsome matching-numbers Porsche 356 SC presents well, is nicely accessorized, thoughtfully upgraded, and runs well, making it an ideal car to use and enjoy in events or weekend drives.
