Description

1964 Porsche 356 C Coupe with Sunroof
s/n 216849, Engine no. 4095363
Anthracite with Black Leather

Ferdinand Porsche`s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine output over doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented huge advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. They were available in several configurations as both coupes and cabriolets, and with several motors. Comparatively few of the coupe models were fitted at the factory with a sunroof. Later in life, several cars were retrofitted with sunroofs adapted from 911 series Porsches, this being one such example.

In addition to the sunroof, this particular car has been further enhanced with a ‘hot-rod’ engine, built up from a 1969 Porsche 912 case, and fitted with more user friendly Weber carburetors. We estimate the engine to be producing approximately 110 horsepower with a very wide torque band. The car has been lowered slightly front and back, and sits on beautiful chrome wheels with new, low profile Dunlop tires. The car is fitted with factory amber driving lamps below the bumper, as well as the desirable factory headrest option.

Cosmetically and structurally, the car is in excellent order, boasting tight and even panel match throughout, including the difficult to fit front bonnet. The doors and door jams have crisp edges with excellent shut. The floors are original, and free of corrosion or corrosion repair, while the battery box has been replaced and is currently very solid. Much of the car’s structural integrity is owed to the fact it was sold new here in California, and remains a fantastic example of a “black plate” California car.

The paintwork is done to high standards, and although not a factory color of the period, gives the car a handsome, mature look. The interior leather is supple and nicely trimmed. The chrome is in good condition inside and out. The engine bay and underside are both somewhat detailed, in keeping with good ‘tour’ standards.

Mechanically the car is in fantastic order; with fantastic power, taut suspension, effective brakes, wonderful transaxle and synchros, and precise steering. Accordingly, this sunroof-equipped, disc brake, ‘outlaw-spec’ C coupe will make for an outstanding event car, where it can be driven hard, and the improvements enjoyed.
