Description

1965 Ford Mustang Fastback
s/n 5R 09A 188474
Burgundy metallic with Grey Interior

First generation Mustangs were instantly successful in competition. Whether it was in the Tour de France, drag racing, SCCA, or Trans-Am, the cars scored considerable victories from the outset. At the hands of Jerry Titus, Bob Johnson, and Mark Donohue, GT 350’s won the SCCA B-Production Championship in 1965, 1966, and 1967, and Trans-Am in 1966 and 1967.

This particular car was built from a standard fastback which was stripped to a bare shell, and purpose-built as a no-excuse B-production race car in 2002. It was built by a 40+ year experienced Mustang expert, master welder and fabricator. The result is a fully sorted, well-balanced, subtly reinforced, safe, fast, and reliable car. Since completion, it has been raced by a well-known West Coast vintage racer. It is ready to run with a newly freshened motor and transmission. It has log books from HMSA, CSRG, and SCCA, and was built to 1967 SCCA GCRs, which are used by many vintage groups. Spares package included with four extra American Mags.

Body:
The body was stripped and thoroughly cleaned and any surface rust treated. The body was checked on a surface plate for square and certified. Much chassis stiffening was added including seam welding the whole front structure. A custom built hand welded roll structure was built (8 point with horizontal bar at lower dash and door bars added). All tube joints were sleeved and welded. The roll structure has been inspected and certified by the SCCA. A battery tray was added to the trunk (along with a structural aluminum fire wall) and a 16 gal fuel cell installed.

The car was prepped and painted by Automotive Perfection of Redwood City, CA. All body work was completed to a high standard (blocked and primed three times and Sekurit urethane paint applied and clear coated). All new/NOS gaskets and stainless trim were used to install new glass, door handles etc. A Shelby GT-350 fiberglass hood, front valence and plexiglass rear window are fitted (R Code notched at roof).

Interior:
A GT-350 style dash with SW period correct gauges were installed. The steering wheel is a removable full-spline unit attached to a Lee steering box (quick steer) via a Woodward steering u-joint. A period correct racing seat is securely mounted along with a stock passenger seat for ride and drives. The door panels are hand fabricated .050 aluminum riveted to the doors along with a fabricated aluminum package tray over the rear seat area.

Drive train:
The current engine was developed in about 2005 for more performance than the original race engine. It includes a Sportsman Block, Scat steel crank, H Beam rods, J&E forged pistons. The heads are custom Roush iron heads (per vintage regs.) that are highly reworked (12.8:1 compression); Race-Flo stainless valves with double springs and titanium retainers). ARP bolts, ARP studded main caps, stud girdle, Melling high volume oil pump and various associated hardware are race proven parts. An Edelbrock performer intake manifold (modified with “Cobra” stamping) is mated to a Holley Pro Shop 650 DP body carburetor with custom metering. Flow bench work was performed by Competition Carburetion of Reno NV. A race aluminum flywheel with Cobra diaphragm clutch (Kevlar) and McLeod hydraulic T/O bearing release is fitted along with McLeod SFI bell housing (scatter shield). Exhaust is comprised of Hooker race headers into a torque box fabricated merge to Race-Flo 2 ½” mufflers (will make sound requirements at any track). A Howe double pass aluminum radiator and Porsche style oil cooler have been battle tested with track temperatures of over 130 degrees. All appropriate hoses are Airquip braided SS.

The engine was recently comprehensively refreshed by a 30 year Ford engine specialist/machinist. It was balanced and blueprinted for performance and durability. This work was performed in the winter of 2009-2010. Computerized specs show approx. 436 HP at 6ooo RPM and 420 LB FT torque at 5500 RPM.

The transmission is a 4 speed top loader with a 1965 casting from David Kee in Texas. The box was fully customized for racing (specs provided to buyer). A Hurst shift mechanism is fitted. The box was completely rebuilt in the winter of 2008 by Kee with new gears and other components.

The differential is a Ford 9” (1965 casting) with 4.11 gears with Detroit True Track LSD and 28 spline Curry axles. Axle bearings and seals were recently replaced.

Suspension and brakes:
The front suspension has been thoroughly reinforced and lower control arm pickup points modified (bump steered). All bushings and bearings are high quality racing parts. KONI shocks are attached along with Shelby GT350 front springs. A one inch front sway bar is fitted.

Brakes are as original as allowed utilizing larger but “stock” components e.g. Ford Torino front and rear brakes (rear drums 2 1/2 “). Pads and linings are carbon metallic.
The car runs American 15x7 Torque Thrust D wheels with Hoosier 25.5 8.5 x 15 bias race tires.

Over $14,000 has been spent in the last 18 months on engine freshening and new transmission, and records are available for this work. A small but helpful spares package with wheels and other consumable items is also included.

The car is in very nice cosmetic condition. The paintwork is high quality and the body is solid and straight. There are few significant blemishes, and the chrome and metal trim are in good shape, being straight and displaying light aging. Overall, the car has very good race cosmetics. The interior is very tidy and of course functional. There is a full roll cage, and the condition of the dashboard, seats, panels, and controls, is in keeping with an attractive well-prepared vintage car that will display in the paddock when not on the track. The engine compartment is also very nice, being clean and purposeful, and showing off the massive air cleaner and chassis reinforcements. All of the requisite safety competition components are in place as well.
