Description

1965 Porsche 356 SC Coupe
s/n 219867, engine no. 812866
Signal Red with Black Interior

Ferdinand Porsche's first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production's end, the car had come a long way. Engine power output more than doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented significant advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. The 356C was available in both coupe and cabriolet form, each with several motors. Aside from cars fitted the complicated and exotic Carrera four-cam racing motors, the SC the top of the range in terms of performance, with its more sporting suspension and more powerful motor.

This particular example is a factory SC that was sold new in Southern California and is a black plate car. It was capably restored to high end driver standards by Ted Blake, who is well-regarded in 356 circles for his correct, high-quality work. The restoration, performed in 2008-2010, included both mechanical and cosmetic work, including new paint, new interior, rebuilt instruments by Palo Alto Speedometer, new chrome, rebuilt engine, and new clutch. Over $30,000 in invoices are included with the car, which do not include the paintwork, but include extensive mechanical work and the restoration of the interior. Most recently in November of 2014, the car had the carburetors adjusted, and the shift linkage adjusted.

The car is cosmetically excellent, with a straight and solid body wearing high quality paintwork in excellent condition. The paint shows virtually no wear and the gaps are very good throughout. The chrome trim and other brightwork are excellent, as are the glass and lights. All glass appears to be original. The hood crest is showing some age. The car sits on evocative knock-off style wheels and also comes with a set of chromed steel wheels date coded November 1964 (widened to 5.5 inches) in excellent condition, along with hub caps.

The interior is excellent overall, and correctly restored to high standards, including square weave carpets, correct rubber mats, and correct upholstery patterns on the seats. The inserts use perforated upholstery. The headliner is excellent, as is the dashboard, including the rebuilt instruments. The car has a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio. The chrome is excellent throughout the interior and there is a small amount of crazing to the horn button. The sill trims and door jambs have been nicely redone.

The engine compartment is extremely clean and nicely detailed. The firewall heatpad is fresh in appearance, as is the majority of the engine compartment. The car has Weber carburetors with adapters to allow the fitment of original Knecht air filter housings, which give the engine a more correct visual presentation while also permitting the improved performance of the Webers. The engine number falls within the range to suggest the car is matching-numbers although no Kardex is present with the car to definitively confirm this. The front compartment is also nicely restored, with new plastic liner tray and leather spare tire strap. The spare is date-coded May of 1965 and the original jack is present. The car also has a reproduction tool roll with tools and cloth.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a genuine black plate 356SC finished in its original color. Comprehensively restored to high level driver standards, the car is ready to enjoy and is complete with owner’s manual, tool roll with tools, jack, original wheels with hub caps, extensive invoices going back approximately 15 years, and car cover.
