Description

1966 Ferrari 330 GTC
s/n 9111 engine no. 9111
Red with Tan Interior

Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330GTC is highly sought after today. These cars are extremely nice to drive, even in today`s traffic, because of the wide torque band provided by the 4 litre V-12 and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. Its elegant, understated lines, and classic Ferrari layout means that the 330 GTC is finally emerging from years of under-appreciation.

This is a superbly documented matching-numbers 330 GTC that was originally smoke grey with a tan interior. It was sold new in Rome in December of 1966, and was in Italy until 1973, at which point it was exported to the United States. The car passed through the hands of a number of owners in the United States, and was cosmetically restored in the late 1980’s. The current owner acquired the car in April of 2003 from Ferrari of Los Gatos, and has fastidiously maintained the car, and also driven it some 8000 kilometers, which ensures that it is a sorted and relatively reliable example.

The documentation on the car from the current ownership period is outstanding, and the car also comes with copies of its original build sheets. There is a thick sheaf of records, notes, and other documents indicating the level of care that the car has had. The car had a full engine rebuild in 2004-2005, including Carillo connecting rods, JE pistons, valves, valve guides, and bearings. The headers were ceramic coated as well. The crankshaft was done by Sammy Hale and the machine work was done by Tim Morgan. Many of the ancillaries were also replaced or restored, including clutch, starter, alternator, radiator, brake system, carburetors, and tachometer. Countless smaller items were also addressed, including ignition components, steering rod ends, fuel lines, and brake pads. The tires were replaced with proper non-70 series Michelin XWX’s as well.

The car received an engine-out service in 2009, which included a number of other small items as well. The throttle linkage was recently adjusted and the carburetors synchronized by Patrick Ottis. Mr. Ottis also performed an inspection in December of 2009, which revealed the car to be a high quality driver with a nice cosmetic restoration, and some mechanical restoration work performed. He noted a few minor issues, but great compression ranging from 150 to 165 pounds across all twelve cylinders. The car was shown at Concorso Italiano in Monterey in August of 2008, where it was awarded silver.

The car is in very nice cosmetic condition. The body is very nice, with great gaps and fit, and straight panels. The paint was done to high standards and is aging nicely, with a few small blemishes but nothing to detract significantly the from the car’s strong overall impression. The chrome varies from good to excellent, being excellent on the bumpers and headlight rings, but with some pitting on the side mirror, window trims, and door handles. The headlamps are Cibié items, and the glass and lights are very good throughout, with a small area of delamination on the windscreen. The wheels are in good shape, and the car has the correct square ear spinners to go with the Campagnolo mags.

The interior is in delightful shape. The carpets and upholstery are excellent throughout, with a very nice light but even patina. The leather seats are perfectly mellowed, and the dashboard and instruments are excellent. The headliner appears to be original and is very nice, and even the dome lights work. The wood is very good, the steering wheel is excellent, and the safety belts are of the original type.

The engine compartment is extremely clean and has numerous correct details including washer bag, battery hold down, yellow fuel lines, and header heat shields. The trunk has been reupholstered with plush carpet and is very nice. The spare with tire is still present, as is the spare hold down.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a lovely example of this desirable model. The car presents and runs very nicely, but is not too nice to discourage its owner from actually using and enjoying the car, making this an ideal high caliber driver. The car has been very well-maintained, and comes with much supporting documentation, as well as the jack with jack bag.
