1967 Brabham BT21-A
s/n BT-21A-5
Yellow with Red Stripe and black seat

The Brabham Company founded by three-time World Driving Champion Jack Brabham and genius racecar designer Ron Tauranac built the cars to beat in Formula II and formula III between 1960 and 1970. Racing under their firm name, “Motor Racing Developments, in Formula II, one model won eleven consecutive races, while in Formula III their BT15 won 42 Races in the hands of future F1 stars.

In the United States, we have SCCA and Brabhams ran in Formula C with 1100cc and Formula B with 1600cc which was basically a Formula II car. Our Brabham BT 21-A is one of the Formula B cars. The original owner was Gary Smith, who ran the car in Southern Califonia’s Cal Club, and the current owner purchased the car from Jerry Haight in Northern California when set up as a Formula Ford.

In today’s Vintage Racing scene, Brabham is the chassis to have in the pre-wing era Formula classes. This particular car was run in the SCCA as late at the 1980’s by which time it had been converted to a Formula Ford. The current owner, a noted West Coast vintage racer purchased the car in Sacramento, California.

The car completed a chassis up restoration in 2008. Zero time on a Lotus twin came engine rebuilt by Bill Schlossnagel with steel crankshaft. Suspension is updated from 21A to trailing link arm front suspension and enlarged pedal box which most of the 21A’s received. The Hewland Mk8 5spd, shocks, girling brakes, new wheels and tires, and virtually every rod end and bushing were restored. The car is like new.

While the car has been driven to test, the restoration has zero race hours since completion. The car is accepted in CSRG and HMSA, and carries a CSRG log book.

Accompanying the car is a large loose leaf binder with before, restoration and after photos together with the major receipts for the motor, gearbox rebuild, fuel cell, and gear charts, dyno sheets and other information.

This car represents an opportunity to enjoy single seat racing in arguably the best chassis from a golden period in formula car history.
