Description

1969 Brabham BT-29 Formula B Racecar
s/n BT29-28
Topaz Blue with Gold Stripe

The Brabham Company, founded by two-time World Driving Champion Jack Brabham and genius racecar designer Ron Tauranac, built cars to compete in Formula I, Formula II and formula III between 1960 and 1970. By 1960, Brabham was the world’s largest supplier of customer open wheel racecars. Jack Brabham’s 1966 World Driver’s Championship remains the only such achievement using a car bearing the driver’s own name. Racing under their firm name, “Motor Racing Developments”, in Formula II, one model won eleven consecutive races, while in Formula III their BT15 won 42 Races in the hands of future F1 stars. In the United States, in races sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America, Brabhams ran in Formula C with 1100cc single cam engines, and even more successfully in Formula B (later known as Formula Atlantic) with 1600cc twin can engines - a set of parameters nearly identical to Europe’s Formula II category.

s/n BT29-28 was originally owned by Fred Opert Racing and driven in Pro Races on the West Coast by Gary Gove in 1971 and 1972. In the late 1972 the car found its way into Laguna Seca’s turn 2 catch fencing, and damage was sustained. Still unrepaired, the car was sold to Michael Rigby in 1989 who owned another BT29, and then onward to Joe Maria of New York. Maria restored the car for historic competition and sold it to Paul Flowers of Dothan, Alabama who actively campaigned the car throughout the East Coast in SVRA with considerable success.

Today the car is best described as a beautifully restored and presented, track ready example. Approximately 1 hour of track time has been logged on the Dave Vegher fully legal twin cam, with similar time on the Taylor Racing Engineering-built Hewland FT200 transaxle. This example has regularly placed at the front of the CSRG Formula B race results, beating virtually every other FB car at one time or another.

Included with the car is helpful spares package including almost two full set of bodywork including windscreens, and extra set of near new replica Brabham wheels, and several additional gear ratios and dog rings. On file are SVRA and CSRG vintage racing log books, historical notes from Gary Gove, period race articles, Dyno results from Dave Vegher showing 199.5hp, making this 1600cc twin cam the very best to come out of Mr. Vegher’s shop to date.

The Brabham BT-29 offered here represents the most advanced, developed, and competitive of the Formula B cars produced by Brabham, or for that matter, virtually any of other manufacture of the period. It is eligible the world over for many prestigious historic events, and is arguably the best chassis from a golden period in formula car history.
