Description

1967 Ferrari 330 GTC
s/n 10585, engine no. 10585
Rosso Cina (China Red) with Black Leather Interior

Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330GTC is highly sought after today. These cars are extremely nice to drive, even in today’s traffic, because of the wide torque band provided by the 4 litre V-12 and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. The cars perfectly tread the line between the classic Ferrari essence and more modern technical features such as rear-mounted 5-speed gearbox, disc brakes and independent suspension all around, and genuinely muscular powerplants. Air conditioning was also optionally available for the first time. Because of its elegant understated lines and classic Ferrari layout, the 330 GTC has finally emerged from years of under-appreciation. Just 600 330 GTC were constructed between 1966 and 1968. While many GTC owners have large collections of important Ferraris, their GTC will often be the choice car for driving events.

This particular car is a matching-numbers long time California example that has been enthusiastically kept. It has been in Southern California since at least 1984, and was restored during that period to include a famously comprehensive repaint by Junior Conway and his legendary shop, the House of Color. Paint by “Junior”, costing around $75,000 in the early 90s is a spectacular distinction and represents the fastidious care and pride of ownership that the car has enjoyed. There are records back to 1985, which substantiate the gradual accumulation of mileage from its then current reading of 29,000 to its current reading of 53,249 miles. In recent years, the car has been maintained by the Gran Touring Classics in Long Beach, which has performed regular maintenance such as valve adjustment, suspension bushings, tuning, front wheel bearings, new fuel pump, and various other work.

The car is very complete and comes with an extra set of Campagnolo alloy wheels (wearing Michelin XWX tires) in addition to the Borrani wire wheels, books, service records, tool roll with tools, jack bag with jack, wheel chock, light bulb holder with bulbs, floor mats, car cover, fuses, original brochure (stamped with Modena Motors, Redwood City), waning triangle, copies of the parts manuals, 3 sets of original Nieman keys, and copies of the original build sheets. The owner’s manual is an original item but the binding has been reinforced.

The car still makes a strong cosmetic impression, despite having been painted many years ago. The paint still looks great overall and it is clear that it was a very high quality job. There is some checking appearing on the right rear fender, the occasional touched up chip, a small divot in the leading edge of hood, and surface scratches, but the paint shines beautifully and shows the extraordinary craftsmanship that characterizes the work of Junior Conway. Included in this is his trademark recessed antenna. The chrome is very good across the board, with very nice bumpers and light pitting only in a few areas such as the door handles, fender vents, and windscreen surrounds. The wheels are beautifully polished.

The interior presents beautifully, with a fresh appearance overall. The leather is excellent with light creasing only, and the carpets are in fine shape. The dashboard, instruments, and switches are excellent. The wood is very nice as well, and displays the correct finish. The steering wheel is also excellent The headliner is in fine shape as well, and the interior is correctly presented across the board other than the fitment of a period “Lear Jet” 8 track player, a neat vintage touch.

The engine compartment is correct in appearance and nicely detailed. It is extremely clean and retains yellow fuel lines, windscreen washer bag, correct hood liner, and knurled airbox keepers, all of which are in excellent shape. The trunk carpet is correct and in excellent shape although the foam backing is coming apart. The correct spare Borrani wire is in place in the trunk.

The car runs and drives well. Although not freshly rebuilt, the motor starts easily and is well tuned. It revs enthusiastically and sounds good, even if it doesn’t make the raw power of today’s upgraded and rebuilt units that employ custom pistons and connecting rods. The transaxle shifts extremely well when warm, but must be shifted deliberately into 1st and 2nd gears when cold. The chassis and suspension are tight and the brakes effective.

Long a favorite among Ferrari connoisseurs who appreciate their excellent road manners and elegant styling, the secret around the 330 and 365 GTC is out, with a recent explosion in values. After years in the shadow of some of their less understated brethren, GTCs are now appreciated for their mechanical sophistication, performance, elegance, and rarity. Just 600 examples were built and this is a high caliber example. A matching-numbers car, this GTC has exceptional integrity and is extremely complete. It is desirably equipped with both wire and alloy wheels and is a matching numbers example that has enjoyed obvious pride of ownership for its entire life.
