Description
1967 Ferrari 330GTC Speciale `Princess de Rethy`
s/n 10241, Engine no. 10241
Azzurro Aurora Mettalizzato Savadin with Ivory Interior
Of the most stunning late 1960`s Ferrari road cars, the four Princess de Rethy coach built Pininfarina bodied were cars built between 1966-67 on a 330 chassis with a GTC drive train. These four were the last front engined 12 cylinder road cars where Ferrari accepted a commission from a royal customer (The wife of King Leopold of Belgium, Princess Lilian de Rethy) to build not just a custom version of a series, but a different model. The princess ordered the first for herself, and secured the second commission for famous heart surgeon Dr. Michael Debakey. This example is the last and arguably the most beautiful of the four; the only one with the magnificent ivory leather interior. It is one of the most unique late 1960`s Ferrari road cars available on the market today.
The late Greg Garrison, who owned this example for most of its life, said it was his wife`s favorite and it is easy to see why. The clear difference with this unique Ferrari is from others in its special sleek lines, roomy interior and touring elegance. Other features include no bumper overriders, flat taillight lenses, and front bumpers that end before they reach the grille, rather than wrapping into the grille aperture. The treatment of the rear end is striking and features a unique to this model special contoured rear windscreen and flying buttresses, an originality of design that much later became a Ferrari standard, appearing on countless subsequent (and always mid-engined) cars such as the production version of the 206/246 Dino. The trunk is quite roomy, easily twice the size of most two late 1960`s two seater Ferraris. This, along with a custom luggage shelf behind the seats, allows for overnight trips.
This Ferrari is an original unrestored low mileage car in outstanding condition, having covered just 16,000 miles from new. Originally sold to Dr. Franco Palma, a surgeon in Rome, it has been sympathetically kept up its very limited and private owners in the past 40 years, but never restored or completely disassembled. In 2004 it was awarded ``Finest Classic Ferrari`` at Concorso Italiano and later went on to win the Ferrari Club of America National Meet award for ``best original Ferrari``.
Within the last 3000 miles, the car has received four new Michelin XWX tires, a recored radiator, repaired electric windows, new Koni shock absorbers, brake and clutch rebuilds, and an alignment. Specific work completed as part of the above has included new brake pads and hoses, fluid changes, a resleeved clutch master cylinder, new slave cylinder, and various hydraulic lines. Other work has consisted of the replacement of some fuel lines, new spark plugs, new exhaust tips, and an alignment. The above work was performed by Patrick Ottis. In addition the car has been regularly exercised and serviced.
This Princess de Rethy Ferrari is stunning to behold, and is in excellent cosmetic and superb mechanical condition. Much of the paint is original and has survived beautifully, with minor wear only in the form of a few chips and a few small cracks. The body is perfectly straight, with excellent panel fit throughout. The chrome is all very good to excellent with some light scratching in remote areas. The glass and lenses are excellent, especially in the case of the all important rear window with its complex curves.
The interior is in superb original condition with only light wear to the driver`s seat leather. The headliner, door panels, console, and instruments are minimally worn, with few signs of aging and no appreciable deterioration. The dashboard is has no shrinkage or discoloration. The wood steering wheel is in excellent condition. It comes with the original Becker Europa radio. The red carpets are well fitted high quality wool, and like new. The door panels are unique to this car and feature door releases of the type fitted to Daytonas. The car comes with overmats as well as a cover.
The spacious trunk is trimmed in red carpet to match the interior, and is in excellent condition. The spare is a correct to this car Campagnolo alloy wheel in need of restoration. There is a jack bag with jack and tool roll, which is partially complete. The engine and underside show how carefully the car has been kept. There is no rust or significant corrosion other than typical light usage marks. The engine compartment, housing the 300 Horsepower V-12 engine is clean and original except for a repainting of the inner fender panels.
This is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to acquire one of the worlds most beautiful and unique road going Ferraris. It is a very fast car. It drives wonderfully and comfortably, and never overheats. This car truly represents a different era; one in which royalty could approach a company and request a new car model, exactly to their tastes, and receive a genuinely bespoke and unique car.
Embodying all of the legendary Pininfarina traits that have made them the designer of choice for Ferrari for decades, this example is an important piece of coach-built Ferrari history. Unlike some other contemporary one-off Ferraris (by Michelotti for example), this car is intrinsically beautiful with timeless lines. Historically significant and aesthetically stunning, seasoned collectors and Ferrari enthusiasts around the world will recognize this as one of the most important acquisitions available.
