Description

1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 Fastback
Ford s/n 7R02K113027, Shelby s/n 67200F4 0039,
Wimbledon White with Black interior

When Ford wanted a genuinely high performance race ready variant of the already wildly successful Mustang, they knew who to ask. Carroll Shelby had already fashioned a name for himself in the motoring world with the outrageous and legendary Cobra, and by winning some sort of 24-hour race in France driving some foreign car called and Aston Martin. Shelby arranged with Ford`s San Jose, California plant to make nothing but partially complete white on black Mustang fastbacks with high performance 289 cid V8s and 4-speeds for two days straight, and then had the cars trucked to Shelby-American’s Los Angeles plant. Once there, the cars were fitted with special cams, larger intake manifolds and carburetors, tubular headers, and finned and baffled high capacity oil pans. Heavy duty brakes were fitted, along with a limited slip differential and shock tower brace, and the suspension substantially modified (including the fitment of larger front sway bar and Koni shocks). Numerous other modifications were performed, including the relocation of the battery into the trunk and the deletion of the +2 rear seats.

For 1967, the Mustang was updated and restyled, and so too was the Shelby version. The GT350 was supplemented by the big block GT500 with its 428cid engine, and both cars received a deeper front grille cavity, rear spoiler, unique vents and extractors along the side of the car, new alloy wheels, and the unique inner headlights placed in the grille aperture. The cars gained triangulated harnesses mounted to the roll bar as well. Although the GT500 was exciting as a new model, the GT350 remained the pick for the sporting and enthusiastic driver thanks to its superior weight distribution and more sporting power delivery characteristics. The GT350 was much more nimble, had more performance-oriented suspension, and the small block engine provided a more racy and peaky experience that is more satisfying for enthusiast drivers.

This particular car is a very early 1967 example (#0039), and is fitted with unique red running lights at the rear of the cabin air extractors on the C-pillars, a feature included only on the first 200 cars or so. Additionally, because of problems with suppliers in California, production was subsequently moved from Shelby American’s Southern California facility to Detroit, making this among the last California built cars. This car has a Marti report, indicating that the body was built in San Jose and fitted of course with the 289 cid 4 barrel high performance engine. The car was sold new at Pletcher Ford in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and ordered with the extra cooling package, courtesy light group, fold down rear seat, power steering, power brakes (discs in the front), AM radio and interior décor group. It was shipped on the 7th of November 1966 and sold new to a Richard Primiano of Philadelphia. The car passed through the hands of a number of owners in Pennsylvania, and was restored in the late 1990’s/early 2000’s to very high standards. The car was fitted with the Cobra quadruple Weber carburetor setup, which was originally at $1700 option on a car that stickered at $4000!

The previous owner reports that the metal is all original throughout, and the current owner purchased the car several years ago and kept it as part of his large collection of significant automobiles. The car is in excellent condition now, and was clearly restored to very high standards. The paintwork is excellent throughout, as is the body. The chrome, trim, and badges are excellent, as is the glass. The wheels and tires are also excellent, with genuine 1967 dated Shelby alloy wheels with Goodyear tires.

The interior is very correct and is in excellent shape. The original radio is still in place, and the carpets, upholstery, dashboard, and instruments are all excellent, being both correct and in like new condition. The car has a real wood steering wheel as well, and a pair of auxiliary gauges (amps and oil pressure). The triangulated seatbelts and roll bar are also in place.

The engine is extremely clean and beautifully detailed. The engine compartment is also very correct. It has an Autolite battery, and the decals and labels have been faithfully reproduced throughout. The engine is correctly finished in blue, and the car has the correct Shelby specific components such as “Cobra” emblazoned coolant pipe and valve covers. The trunk is also very correct and clean, as is the undercarriage. All in all, the car is extremely impressive, and indeed a recent inspection by Mustang guru Jack Schroll confirmed that this is an excellent example. He noted that the engine and transmission are both correct high-po units produced in 1967.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a superb early production 1967 GT350. Journalists noted that the 1967 GT350’s very much continued the spirit of the earlier cars, but also understood that as the GT500 was coming along, that the direction of these cars was changing. The 1967 GT350 is then, the last of a breed of very special Shelby road racing-oriented cars, and this is without doubt an example that will make its new owner proud, be it on the open road or for show.
