Description

1967 Maserati Ghibli
s/n AM115/446, engine no. AM115/446
Red with Bone Interior

Penned by the famous and very talented Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Ghibli was one of his earliest designs. Featuring Maserati’s wonderful quad-cam alloy V8 derived from Maserati’s famous 450S racing car, the Ghibli had excellent performance, but was also well-appointed and comfortable. While in production, it was Maserati’s flagship, and represented the last of the traditional front-engined cars before the mid-engined phase began. With just over 1,100 coupes constructed, they are rarer than Ferrari’s Daytona, and at a fraction of the cost, represent strong value Italian thoroughbreds in today’s marketplace.

This particular car is believed to be an original 50,000km example (31,000 miles) and is a great-running, solid, and honest car. Accompanying the car are maintenance invoices going back to the 1970s. It was sold new in Italy and was imported to California sometime in the early 1970s, where it has remained since. Documents on file confirm it was sold by Mitey Mazda of Vallejo, California to a Mr. Carrillo for $7,500 in 1974. Originally dark blue metallic, the color of the car was changed to red many years ago. It retains its original interior (other than front seat upholstery) and has had approximately $20,000 in recent work to bring it to its current excellent driving condition. This included new water pump, rebuilt braking system (including boosters and lines), new clutch, and AC system service, replacement of radiator hoses and ancillary drive belts, and a complete fluid and filter change. Most of this work was performed by Réné of Burlingame Motors, or Grand Prix Motors of Campbell, California.

Cosmetically, this car is a nice honest, solid driver. The body is straight and displays good panel fit, gaps, and operation. The paint is glossy but does have a few chips (some of which have been touched up), surface cracks, and scratches. The chrome is generally nice, although there is fine pitting and haze in selected areas, while other areas are in very fine shape. Overall, the impression of the car when walking by it is strong, and it is only on more careful inspection that the light aging becomes evident. The wheels are in very good shape and wear older BF Goodrich tires. The car is equipped with a Talbot mirror and has both 6 digit blue California license places, indicating that it has been in California since the 1970s. The glass and lights are in very good shape.

The interior makes a strong impression as well. The upholstery is in very good to excellent shape, and appears to be original other than the front seats, which were reupholstered in vinyl. The door panels, rear side panels, and luggage compartment panels are leather and appear to be original, as do the dashboard and console. All of them are in very good shape. The instruments and switches appear to be original and are excellent considering this. The carpet also appears to be original and is very good, with a small worn through area near the gas pedal from the driver’s foot resting there. The rear compartment is spacious and trimmed to the same standards and materials as the interior. It is in excellent shape and the matching spare is in place under the floor.

The engine compartment is extremely tidy and is nicely detailed. The finishes on the valve covers, airbox, and inner fenders are in excellent shape and the engine appears stock other than a CDI ignition system.

Maserati’s flagship during one of the golden ages of motoring, the car has all the ingredients for greatness and collectability, including purposeful styling by one of the great Italian designers, sophisticated quad cam powerplant, and impressive performance. This particular example is an excellent opportunity to acquire a longtime California example that is structurally nice, runs well, and has documentation going back nearly 40 years.
