Description

1967 Ford Shelby American GT500 Mustang
s/n 67402F5U00426
Moss Green with Black Interior

When Ford wanted a genuinely high performance race ready variant of the already wildly successful Mustang, they knew who to ask. Carroll Shelby had already fashioned a name for himself in the motorsports world with the outrageous and legendary Cobra, and by winning some sort of 24-hour race in France driving some foreign car called and Aston Martin. Shelby arranged with Ford`s San Jose, California plant to make nothing but partially complete white on black Mustang fastbacks with high performance 289 cid V8s and 4-speeds for two days straight, and then had the cars trucked to Shelby-American’s Los Angeles plant. Once there, the cars were fitted with special cams, larger intake manifolds and carburetors, tubular headers, and finned and baffled high capacity oil pans. Heavy duty brakes were fitted, along with a limited slip differential and shock tower brace, and the suspension substantially modified (including the fitment of larger front sway bar and Koni shocks). Numerous other modifications were performed, including the relocation of the battery into the trunk and the deletion of the +2 rear seats.

For 1967, the Mustang was updated and restyled, and so too was the Shelby version. The GT350 was supplemented by the big block GT500 with its 428cid engine, and both cars received a deeper front grille cavity, rear spoiler, unique vents and extractors along the side of the car, new alloy wheels, and the unique inner headlights placed in the grille aperture. Although rated at 355hp (for 1967, which was lowered to 335hp for ’68), contemporary testers agreed that the quote was suspiciously low, and Car Life magazine writers indicated that they suspected the real output to be nearer 500hp.

This particular car was sold new at Hayward Ford in Hayward, California on 26 February 1967. As an early car, it is equipped with inboard headlamps. The original pre-deilvery service sheet and window sticker are both included, indicating that the car was originally finished in dark green and equipped with power steering, power disc brakes (front), shoulder harness, 4-speed transmission, deluxe wheels, radio, fold down rear seat, exhaust emission control, and rallye stripe. The original owner was a fellow from Walnut Creek, California, and the car has remained in the San Francisco Bay Area of California from new. Its second owner was in Lafayette, CA, who had the car restored in the late 1980’s. It was sold via Fantasy Junction in 1990 to an owner who kept the car until 1995. It then passed on to its fourth owner, in Novato, CA, who had a 482 cid aluminum engine with billet steel crankshaft made by Caroll Shelby Enterprises in 2005. The cost of the engine was $25,980, and produced 555hp and 594tq on the dyno. The engine has stainless steel rockers, forged pistons, and is equipped with hydraulic lifters. It runs of pump gas, and is coupled to a 3.90 Detroit Locker differential, which makes the car extremely quick. A new driveshaft was also fitted, along with a heavy duty clutch.

The car presents very nicely with a fresh appearing restoration. The paint has excellent luster, and is in good condition, with a few blemishes and the occasional touched-up chip. The body is very straight and the panel fit is quite good, though the hood and trunk lid could fit better. The chrome ranges from good on the door handles to excellent on the bumpers. The glass and lights are excellent, as are the wheels and tires.

The interior is very nice as well. The original color of the interior was reported to be parchment, which is very rare, though this car was changed to black over 25 years ago. The upholstery is excellent throughout, as are the carpets. The door panels, headliner, dashboard, and instruments are also excellent, and the car has Shelby GT500 floor mats. The car is quite original in configuration, from the upholstery pattern to the roll bar and 3-point seat belts. Even the interior lights all work. The center panel of the dashboard has been signed by Carroll Shelby.

The engine compartment is extremely clean and is nicely detailed. The engine has a Cobra air cleaner and valve covers, as well as FoMoCo hoses, and the original Ford windscreen washer bag. The trunk is in very nice condition, with no noteworthy corrosion, and the correct plaid liner material. There is no spare present.

The car runs and drives very well. The combination of the powerplant and rear axle ratio makes the car outrageously quick, while the steering and brakes work as they should. The chassis feels solid, and the car is very entertaining to drive.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a nice driver big block Shelby that has always been in California. Finished in its attractive original color, the car benefits from its outrageous no-expense spared motor, and is ready to drive and enjoy.
