1968 Ferrari 330 GTS
s/n 10599 engine no. 10599
Blu Tourbillon with Tan Connolly Leather Interior
Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330 GTC and GTS are highly sought after today. Just 100 examples of the GTS were made, making it one of the rarest, most collectible, and most enjoyable classic Ferraris in existence. The cars are extremely nice to drive, even in today`s traffic, because of the wide torque band provided by the 4 litre V-12 and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. Because of its elegant understated lines and classic Ferrari layout, these cars have a timeless appeal that has caused values to skyrocket in recent years.
This particular car is a chance to acquire a truly knock-out example of this wonderful model. It received a no-expenses spared restoration to extremely high standards in 1998-99, and has been carefully stored, used, and maintained since. In addition to the $168,058.60 spent on the restoration itself, the car has also seen $11,132.57 in more recent regular maintenance work with Patrick Ottis to keep the car in excellent running order. This has included annual fluid changes, timing adjustments, rebuilds of the brake booster and clutch slave cylinder, and various other leaks and small problems associated with debugging a car after a thorough restoration. In November of 2007, the car saw its most recent fluids change, and the rectification of a number of minor issues.
Cosmetically, the car is of course in spectacular condition. The color, a period Ferrari color, is very unique and stunning, and the interior was upholstered with NOS (new old stock) leather sourced from Connolly, prior to their demise. The paintwork was done to the highest standards and shows only a handful of very small blemishes associated with normal aging. The panel fit and gaps are excellent and the chromework is superb throughout in terms of both condition and execution. The tires are the correct non-70 series Michelin XWX`s, and the lights and glass are extremely nice as well. The top shows no signs of wear whatsoever, including the rear window and chrome frame. Also of note is that the fiberglass radiator apron is still present and intact on this car.
The interior is equally nice, with no appreciable flaws. The leather upholstery shows no wear, the carpets are excellent, and the dashboard and instruments extremely nice as well. The correct finish has been applied on the dashboard wood, and the steering wheel has been beautifully restored. The car is fitted with nice 3-point safety belts as would have originally been fitted.
The engine compartment and trunk were included in the restoration and are both spotless and very correct. The correct material was employed to upholster the trunk, and the tool roll with tools and jack bag with jack are present. The engine compartment is spotless, with the correct hardware, hoses, and accessories present.
The underside is extremely impressive, and has obviously covered few miles since a complete restoration. It is quite clean, and well-detailed throughout, from the suspension and brakes, to the chassis itself, and the drivetrain as well.
The car drives very well, and has been fitted with a Kevlar clutch, which provides improved bite and driveline response. The engine is extremely strong and performs well, making lots of power and no smoke, as to be expected from a properly and recently rebuilt unit. The chassis and suspension feel as they should, and the transaxle is excellent, with very good 2nd gear synchromesh, when both warm and cold. The brakes are extremely effective as well.
This is a terrific opportunity to acquire what is in many ways the ultimate open classic Ferrari. This car has been comprehensively restored to high standards, and is highly complete, with full books, tools, jack, photo documentation of the restoration, original sales brochure, original Road and Track magazine article, and copies of the original build sheets. The book pouch includes the guarantee booklet, owner`s manual, warrantee booklet, and parts catalog. Certainly at Fantasy Junction, this model is one of our favorites, possibly even a contender for the best post-war motor car ever built. With only 100 examples built, however, it is an extraordinarily rare experience, even among bona-fide collectors. With its understated but elegant styling, this car was obviously meant for a sophisticated gentleman with taste, and the fantastic appreciation of these cars` values is a testament to their enduring appeal.
