Description

1968 Ferrari 365 GTC
s/n 12035, Engine no. 12035
Dark Metallic Blue with Black Leather and Grey Carpets

Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330 and 365 GTC and are highly sought after today. While 600 examples of the 330 were built, just 149 365 GTC’s were built. Both variants are extremely nice to drive, even in today’s traffic, thanks to the wide torque band provided by the engine, and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. 365’s are substantially the same as 330’s, with the exception of the extra .4 litre of displacement, which makes the cars extremely rapid, even by today’s standards. The cars are also fitted with Daytona type transaxle and emergency brake arrangement. From a driver’s standpoint, the 365 GTC is the premier roadgoing Ferrari coupe produced in the 1960’s and is particularly desirable not only for its increased power, but also its rarity. Because of their elegant understated lines, superb driving experience, and classic Ferrari layout, these cars have a timeless appeal that continues to earn them a spot in the collections of the most discerning Ferrari enthusiasts.

This particular example was sold new by AutoBecker in Germany. By the late 1980s the car had been exported to the US and was in Texas. The car sat for many years and was in need of cosmetic restoration. It was sold by Fantasy Junction in the early 1990’s, and eventually ended up with Tom Shaughnessy, who had Mike Sheehan’s ex-mechanic Gens Paulson rebuild the engine. Cosmetically, the car was still in need of restoration, and was sold to Brian Hoyt of Perfect Reflections in 2004. Mr. Hoyt had the motor removed and sent to Patrick Ottis to be dyno tested. After some fine tuning, the engine made 309hp, and Mr. Ottis was suitably impressed with its operation and power output.

Mr. Hoyt had intended to complete the project as his personal car, another acquisition required funding and s/n 12035 went to market. With the restoration still in progress, the car was sold on to its current owner, who then had Wayne Obry of Motion Products complete the restoration at a cost of approximately $283,000. The restoration included all major systems, including suspension, wheels and tires, steering, transaxle, paint and bodywork, chrome, brakes, fuel system, electrical system, interior, and trim. The work was completed in 2009, and the car has seen less than 1,000 miles of use sense.

While done to high standards, the scope of the restoration project was to prepare the car for driving events, rather than to win platinum award at a national level concours. Certain components were selected for performance and reliability, rather that originality. The center console switches are more modern units, as are the indicator and hi-low beam stalks, although the latter are Ferrari items. The headlamps are effective, sealed beamed units that are non-original. New Michelin tires were fitted, rather than XWXs. The alternator, coils, brake master cylinder, and cooling fans are all in excellent working order, but may not be correct for this era Ferrari. For this reason, this car is well suited to the driving enthusiast looking for a freshly done example for tours and rally events, rather than the concours-minded collector seeking absolute originality over function.

The paintwork is fresh and was completed to high standards, with almost no wear. The body is very nice, with great fit and gaps. The chrome is also excellent, as are the wheels. The windscreen has been replaced and is excellent, as is the remainder of the glass. Most of the lights are in excellent shape, though the front turn signal lenses are showing some age. The trim and badges are intact and excellent throughout.

The interior is very nice as well. The upholstery is excellent throughout, as is the carpeting. The dashboard top has been redone, as has the wood, and they are both excellent. The switches and instruments are also in fine shape. Some of the trim is unrestored and is very nice considering this. The steering wheel appears to have been restored at some point in the past, but shows a few blemishes in the wood finish.

The engine compartment is very tidy and clean throughout, as is the trunk, which has been restored as well. The car has its jack with jack bag, as well as extensive records from the restoration, and many photos from the restoration as well.

This is an outstanding driving example of the exceptionally rare and desirable 365 GTC. An understated and distinguished car finished in an understated and distinguished color combination, this example performs wonderfully, making it an ideal example for touring and events.
