Produced between February and July of 1968, The California Special was a limited edition Mustang available only as a hardtop. Only 4,118 were built and special features include: Shelby-type fiberglass rear deck lid and tail panel, side scoops, stripes, special badging, exterior hood locks, pop-off gas cap, louvred hood, blackout grille, and rectangular fog lights (Lucas). Naturally, this example was produced in California, at Fords San Jose plant.

The actual production date was either the 28th of February or the 1st of March.
Today, this car remains in the same configuration, and has been comprehensively restored. It is a matching numbers car (engine ,transmission, rear end etc.) and has been in the Western United States since new. The engine had been rebuilt and balanced and received a .30 overbore. There are a number of add-on option including tilt steering column, wood grain wheel, center console, roof console, Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and intake manifold, finned aluminum valve covers, chrome air cleaner, and dual exhaust. The original intake manifold, 2-barrel carburetor, valve covers, and air cleaner are included. The restoration was both cosmetic and mechanical and included brakes, suspension, engine, ancillaries, lights, rubber, glass, moldings, seals, interior, wheels, etc. etc. etc. The car comes with a binder filled with receipts and photos from the restoration process, which was completed less than 2000 miles ago.
As a result, the car is in excellent condition. There are no significant flaws to speak of. The paint is excellent and free of wear or blemishes, and the chrome is mostly excellent, with only minor wear to the window trims. The engine compartment is spotless, and the interior has been completely redone and is beautiful. The trunk and underside are also very clean. This is an extremely well-substantiated and honest car that has been done right. It is also very rare and in outstanding condition.
