1969 Porsche 911E Coupe
s/n 119200194 engine no. 6290362
Metallic Blue with Black Interior

Early 911s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. For many years, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car’s life difficult today. All early 911s have appreciated tremendously in recent years and 1969 cars are particularly interesting because they have numerous one-year only features because they are the first of the long wheelbase cars and the last of the 2.0 liter cars. The 911E was the middle model of the 911 line, featuring mechanical fuel injection for more power and drivability than the 911T, but a less peaky motor than the 911S.

This particular example is a two-owner blue plate California car that was modified in period with genuine RS parts including flares, steel RS bumper tips, and staggered wheels. The suspension was also upgraded with larger sway bars and lowered ride height. Per the included Certificate of Authenticity, it is a matching numbers car that was finished in a special paint color known simply as metallic blue (code 6853). The car also has H1 headlamps and was equipped from the factory with Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, which it still has. Its first owner kept it for over forty years, and it has a wonderful period hot rod feel that’s different from the majority of modern builds.

The car has seen considerable recent cosmetic detail work, including retrimming the rear side panels and parcel shelf, new door panels and pockets, and miscellaneous exterior trim such as bumperettes, lenses, and new side mirror. New control arm bushings were also installed and the instruments restored. It has driver level paint with plenty of patina but is otherwise an attractive driver level example. It comes with Certificate of Authenticity, invoices for recent work, a tool roll (partially complete), and owner’s manual.

Cosmetically, the car is a nice driver level example. The paintwork shows some wear, numerous chips that have been touched up, and some wear from road use. The body is straight and solid. The wheels are excellent and are particularly evocative thanks to the frosted RSR finish, which perfectly complements the purposeful stance afforded by the ride height and RS rear flares. The car also has a steel RS type front bumper with oil cooler aperture (although the oil cooler is a high capacity radiator type cooler in the conventional location rather than a trombone type). The lights and glass are in very good condition throughout, as is the brightwork.

The interior is in excellent condition. The upholstery is very good, with minor wear to the piping on the passenger’s seat. The carpet is of the correct type and is in excellent condition, as are the door panels and door pockets. The dashboard is free of cracking or warping, and the instruments are in excellent shape. The parcel shelf and headliner are also excellent, as are the switches and knobs. The steering wheel leather was recently renewed and is like new.

The engine compartment is quite clean and tidy, although not freshly restored. Its appearance is consistent with a well-maintained and enthusiastically owned car. The trunk has what appears to be its original carpet set in good shape, although there are a few holes near the battery boxes, which is common in these cars. A strut tower brace has been added an the car comes with its previous six digit blue California license plate.

The car is a pleasure to drive, perfectly embodying the long hood 911 experience. The motor is responsive and pulls evenly and cleanly, with properly tuned fuel injection. The gearbox has excellent synchromesh and good linkage. The clutch is positive in feel and the brakes grab well, with a firm pedal and even stopping capability. The suspension is firmer than stock, giving better body control and a nice sharp feel. Steering effort is light and the front end has the famously communicative 911 feel.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a very cool hot rod 911E that perfectly embodies the R-Gruppe philosophy, except that it was built 20 years before R Gruppe even existed! Incorporating a host of rare genuine RS parts, the car is matching numbers, has been in California virtually its entire life, and remains in its unusual and attractive original color. It is a pleasure to drive and has a pleasant patina that distinguishes it from the sea of crisp and recently built hot rod 911s that enthusiasts typically encounter.
