1970 Porsche Carrera RS Clone
s/n 9110123760 engine no. *64R00607*
White with Red Script with Black Interior
The legendary Carrera RS is widely regarded to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest roadgoing Porsche ever built. Compared to the standard 911, the cars featured larger more powerful engines, flared rear wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels, numerous deletions and alterations to reduce weight, improved suspension, and a few cosmetic alterations, which would become the car’s trademark. With its distinctive contrasting striping and wheels and the simple and functional ‘burzel’ or ducktail, the styling of the RS is iconic. With just 1580 examples built, the cars are in high demand and are accordingly valuable.
Consequently, replicas built using a variety of 911’s (and even 912’s) as bases are popular, particularly since it is relatively easy to achieve the look of the RS. However, most replicas resemble RS’s only visually, and high quality examples that faithfully reproduce the details of the original RS are unusual.
This Porsche 911 is a 1973 911 Carrera RS Tribute Street/Track Hot Rod built and powered by a 1991 3.6L engine and impressive performance upgrades including a full coil over suspension. This car has a wonderful history right here in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Golden Gate Region Porsche Club of America. This lovely Carrera RS has been built with the best track oriented components money can buy and was successfully dominated the Porsche Club time trials by the previous original owners. The car has been professionally built by well-known builders such as Jerry Woods Enterprises, Elephant Racing, Arcane Engineering, The Racers Group and S-Car-Go.
The car started life as a 1970 non-sunroof 911 purchased and resided in the Boulder Co area by the original owners who relocated to California and got caught up in the Porsche Club scene here and eventually became board members. The owner wanted to build this car for light track use and autocross and started with a 2.7L engine with torsion bar suspension, but later progressed to coil-overs and a 3.6L. It sports butt-welded RS rear flares, RS bumpers, a fiberglass ducktail spoiler. Wheels are 17″ Fikse FM10’s which are 8 inches wide up front and 10 inches out back with custom offsets. Under these relatively stock flares the offset on the wheels allow for 245’s up front and 275’s in the back and the wheels are shod with new Toyo R888’s.
The interior is quite nice, full German factory carpeting and headliner. It has retained the original door panels and an un-cracked original dash. All glass is in wonderful shape and windows fully function. All seals had been renewed when a complete down to the tub bare metal two stage paint job was completed. Complete custom roll-cage for safety with a Recaro Passenger and a Momo Acropolis race seat with 5 point 3 inch harnesses with stock retractable seat belts doubling as back up.
The 3.6-liter engine has approximately 55k miles and has 993 injection. This is the twin plug motor with vented dual distributors. It’s mated to a rebuilt 1973 915 gearbox (no more dogleg first) with Quaife LSD and was properly geared 7:31 with Patrick Motorsports crank fire. The injectors were just reconditioned and all fuel lines and filter replaced with brand new Fuel Safe bladder all within the last year. The engine is kept cool even in traffic or summer track days by a custom mounted Setrab cooler up front and a Carrera style cooler mounted in the right fender. All oil is fed through stainless steel braided lines and are custom routed through the passenger compartment for optimum protection. Fresh Swepco fluids just changed throughout. The shifter, shift linkage and motor mounts are all WEVO. Stainless steel heat exchangers are tied into a beautiful and throaty Tri-Y exhaust system with dual exits. This combination provides this 2400 lbs car some real scoot.
Suspension and braking is another place where not a penny has been spared. Starting up front there are welded-in 935 camber boxes which are tied together from the cage (no bolt in strut bar.) The front suspension is an ERP 935 front end, rebuilt steering gear, raised front spindles with height adjustable Bilstein struts. Fully adjustable TRG 1” sway bar.. The 300 lbs/in spring rate up front actually provides a firm but comfortable ride on the street and is a very nice set up for the track. Rear suspension has reinforced strut towers also tied across from the cage. Complete height adjustable coil-over suspension with 500 lbs/in springs, adjustable sway bars and 930 trailing arms (yes you are thinking right, like hen’s teeth.) Spring plate mounts and front sway bar mounts have been fully reinforced with Elephant Racing’s reinforcement plates and professionally installed by them. Brakes are 964 Turbo Big Reds front and rear with Pagid Orange pads. This 911 will out-brake almost any vehicle it meets on the street or track.
When the body went through the transformation nearly 20 years ago it was dismantled and taken down to the tub for paint. The fit and finish of the panels is top notch. Panels are straight and gaps are very even. Doors, hood all line up well and best of all close with the original Porsche “thunk.” The chassis does not show signs of rust, the body does have a few reverse rock stars coming up from rocks thrown up from the wheels and tires.
How does this car drive? On the street it’s actually a very nice drive, superfast when you want it to be yet docile at low speeds and through traffic. The motor has so much torque that you can easily run a gear up through town, so it’s relatively quiet and it doesn’t cough like a Weber equipped car. On track it’s one of the quickest and best stopping early 911’s at any event. The car corners flat, has tenacious grip and accelerates like a 300 hp 2400 lbs car should. To say it’s a bit Jekyll and Hyde is almost an understatement because when this gets up into the revs the entire car comes alive both in dynamics and sound. Its relative light weight and massive torque can make acceleration out of a turn or onto an onramp a bit blurry. Fortunately the massive brakes and composure of the car can haul it back down to sanity pretty quickly. Whether you bring it to the track or just drive it around, it usually attracts a decent crowd and you’ll get a lot of thumbs up and long stares from other drivers and passengers, little do they know it costs far less than $900k.
