Description

1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750
s/n AR*31532813*
Dark Blue with Black Interior

Designed for Bertone by Giorgetto Giugiaro early in his long and illustrious career, the GTV was an immediate favorite from its introduction, initially as the Giulia Sprint GT in 1963. The restrained elegance and perfect proportions of these cars have aged beautifully and the cars survived for over 10 years with relatively light cosmetic changes but significant mechanical upgrades, including the eventual fitment of fuel injection and in this case a 1750cc engine. The initial specification, which included 5-speed transmission and Alfa’s excellent alloy twin-cam inline-4, remained relatively unchanged.

The biggest change occurred in 1969 with the elimination of the early “stepped” hood and the change of the nomenclature to GTV. Under the hood was another story all together. Over the years, the engine displacement grew which altered the GTV’s character. The innovative high-revving, carbureted 1570 cc DOHC four (1600) was succeeded by a 1779 cc four (1750) with a SPICA mechanical fuel injection system in the GTV of 1969 which remained in production through 1971.

This particular US Market example was first sold new in California in 1972 as a 1971 year model, and is titled as such. For the last 10 years it has remained in the collection of a passionate Alfa Romeo enthusiast, who at one time owned approximately 25 Alfas, nearly all of which were painstakingly restored to the level of this wonderful example.

This desirable 1750cc GTV has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration between 2006-2009, which importantly, was both cosmetic and mechanical in scope. The work included paint, upholstery, new body rubbers and emblems, select brightwork inside and out, the restoration of the select instruments, fitment of new brake hoses, pads, and rotors, and fitment of several new ball joints and control arm bushings. The transmission was rebuilt with new synchros and bearings as necessary, and specially treated gears. The cylinder head was also rebuilt, and fitted with new intake and exhaust values, and new valve guides. Finally, the Speca fuel injection system was tuned for easy operation, both when warm and cold.

The resulting car is fabulous to drive. It is everything you would want to see and feel as the end result of a compressive restoration effort. The suspension and steering are tight, and the brakes are effective. The engine demonstrates a quiet and even idle, but pulls strong from low rpms, right up to redline. The transmission is precise and smooth in its operation both up and down, which is often not the case on vintage Alfas!

The cosmetic presentation is excellent throughout. Aside from a few light sanding lines in the paint, evident only upon close inspection, the paintwork is virtually unmarked. A new windshield was installed. The upholstery is beautiful, and freshly done in correct materials. The dash was replaced, and is not a cap. The engine bay is mechanically sound and nicely detailed, but perhaps not quite to concours standards. The underside, while not overly detailed, displaces excellent and undisturbed structural integrity, which is of paramount importance on these unibody construction cars. This example sits on rare and beautiful pent-mag Cromodora wheels with fresh tires.

Included with the sale are original Alfa Romeo sales brochures, and documentation reflecting the restoration work mentioned above.

For much of their lives, GTV have not been valuable enough to justify proper upkeep or restoration, making a genuinely solid, unmodified structurally and mechanically excellent example which has been the subject of a cost-is-no-object restoration exceedingly rare among the majority of cars offered today.
