1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” Coupe
s/n 14653 engine no. B1354
Blu Sera with Tan Leather Interior
As the last of the classic front-engined V12 flagship Ferraris, the 365GTB/4 “Daytona” needs little introduction. Despite retaining the traditional front-engined layout of previous Ferrari’s, the Daytona’s creased styling was decidedly modern, and the specification was very much up to date as well. Its 4.4 liter quad cam V12 produced over 350hp, and was joined to a rear-mounted 5-speed transaxle for optimum weight distribution. The suspension was independent all around, and there were disc brakes at all four corners as well. The car was extremely fast as well, with a genuine 174mph top speed as confirmed by contemporary testers. Despite less than universal praise for the styling when it first appeared, its near perfect proportions have made widely considered to be one of the greatest classic Ferraris of all time. It captures the essence of the classic Ferrari experience while also supplying performance that is exciting even by today’s standards. Indeed, Ferrari’s 1997 return to this layout with the 550 Maranello has proven that the front-engined V12 layout is a timeless concept that still competes with the most exotic mid-engined cars. Just 1284 Daytonas were built before the car was replaced with a new mid-engined car, the Berlinetta Boxer.
This particular car belonged to a doctor in Indiana from 1986 until 2008. He had the car looked after by Motorkraft, who rebuilt the motor shortly before he sold the car. The car’s next owner had the car comprehensively restored by McCabe Automotive Restoration Ltd. at a cost exceeding $120,000. The work included the interior, paint and bodywork, chrome, brakes, suspension, and countless other items. The work took nearly two years, and additionally, significant engine work was performed in March of 2011 by Carobu Engineering. It was dyno tested at 394hp(!) and was done at a cost of $17,157.35. The car is complete with reproduction manuals with pouch, complete tool roll, and jack bag with jack. It currently sits on alloy wheels (9 inches at the back), and also comes with four immaculately restored Borrani wire wheels. The invoices since 2008 total $140,091.06.
The car displays excellent body lines and panel fit. The paint was done to very good standards and presents very nicely, with almost no wear or use since completion. It is a stunning shade of blue, Blu Sera (“evening blue”). The chrome and metal trim are excellent throughout, as are the lights and glazing. The car sits on correct Michelin XWX tires, and the 9-inch rear wheels dramatically change the stance of the car, though the rears are reproduction items. The wire wheels are freshly restored, never installed, and are carefully packed.
The interior is trimmed in fresh tan leather, which is like new. The car has an auxiliary air conditioning systems fitted in the trunk, and it blows freezing cold. The carpets and dashboard were also redone and are excellent. The dashboard has also been correctly redone, and the gauges and switches are in good shape. The gauges work properly, including the clock.
The engine compartment is beautifully detailed and extremely clean. It is correctly finished throughout, as is the trunk, which has the correct type carpeting, which is excellent. The spare Borrani is in place under the floor.
The car drives very well, with an outstanding transaxle. The engine makes great power and sound, and the chassis is solid and reassuring. The car tracks properly and the suspension is tight. The brakes have excellent bite and pull the car up evenly, and the effort required to drive the car is much less than is often cited by magazines.
This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a delightfully non-red Daytona. Benefitting from a recent restoration, the car is nicely equipped and complete with both alloy and wire wheels, books, tools, jacks, extensive photographic documentation of the restoration, and invoices back to the 1980’s. The car is in great cosmetic and mechanical condition, is a pleasure to drive, and is ready to enjoy.
