Description

1972 Lamborghini Espada Series II
s/n 8822, Engine no. 40881
Red with Black Leather

Famous for their audacious, innovative, and impossible to ignore designs, Lamborghini was the one and only automobile manufacture capable of creating the Espada. Boasting an impressive grand touring specification with its 350 hp, quad-cam V12 engine, and seating for 4, the Espada was Lamborghini’s answer to Ferrari’s 365 GTB/4 “Daytona”. The Espada was a more sensible purchase than the concurrently offered Miura, yet remained captivatingly bizarre. It was, up to that point, Lamborghini’s most successful model, with 1,217 cars built between 1968 and 1973.

This particular example was purchased in March 2012 from a local Bay Area owner who had owned the car since approximately 1980. He purchased the car from Jim Loos, also of the Bay Area, who had this Lamborghini as his personal car, and was the Lamborghini dealer. During the long ownership period the car received regular service including work on the brakes and booster, new clutch, and 2nd gear syncro, among other attention.

This is an extremely solid example that runs with good oil pressure, temps, suspension, brakes, clutch, and gearbox. The car has a nice original interior, with only the front seats and carpets having been redone. While originally silver, s/n 8822 was painted to the Lamborghini red prior to 1980. There is no evidence of any serious crash damage or rust in the history of the car. It is numbers matching engine and chassis, with correct number stampings throughout. The car comes with a set of chrome wire wheels, adapters, and spinners, the tool bag, original manual, AM/FM cassette, and two sets of keys.

It is rare to find such a strong running and structurally solid example of these impressive grand tourers. As a late second series model, this example incorporates virtually all the improvements made during the production cycle. The Espada represents outstanding value when compared to Ferraris of the era, and in many ways, is a more well appointed and impressive car. At the very least, the Espada provides for an interesting conversation topic, and makes a statement of uniqueness on arrival.
