The Jarama, introduced in 1970, was one of the last front-engined Lamborghini GT`s, terminating the line that began with the very first Lamborghini, the 350GT. Mechanically, it was similar to the Espada, but with a 10.6 inch shorter wheelbase, the Jarama was considerably more agile to drive. Continuing on with Lamborghinis sophisticated quad-cam V-12, all independent suspension, and five-speed gearbox, the Jarama was a deliberately understated high performance `businessman`s express` intended for those who appreciated Lamborghini`s engineering and performance, but who wanted to maintain a more refined lifestyle and image. Nevertheless, the styling has a subdued excitement that is hinted at by the sharp creases and muscular wheelarches. The car is very well proportioned, and thanks to its thin pillars and generous greenhouse, visibility is excellent. Today, the Jarama continues to exemplify this more subdued approach to enjoying a Lamborghini, in addition to being extremely underappreciated when compared to similar cars.
This particular car is an S model, of which just 150 were built, and which incorporated significant revisions in response to some criticisms of early models. There were a number of changes introduced, including a large hood scoop and fender vents, both of which were aimed at improving cooling, one of the weak points of early Jaramas. Also of note was that the cylinder heads were reworked, the cam timing altered, and the carburetion improved, all of which resulted in an increase in power from 350 to 365 horsepower. Other changes for the S model included improvements throughout the interior in both styling and workmanship, and improved markings for the numerous switches. Reshaping the seats improved legroom for rear seat occupants, and heat and noise insulation was improved throughout the cabin. Finally, more modern magnesium five-bolt (rather than center-lock) Campagnolo alloy wheels were fitted. When it was new, the press universally praised the Jaramas excellent roadholding, noting the manner in which the car offered both safety and excitement, depending on the drivers mood, and also remarking on the superb compromise between firmness in body control and ride comfort.
This particular car is best described as a virgin example in driver condition which has never been subject to a complete restoration. The body is extremely straight, with tight, consistent gaps all around. The underside appears to be completely rust free, and there are only a few small areas of bubbling to the paint which suggest light surface rust. There is no evidence of any body damage or repairs, although at one time the left rear quarter panel was damaged. Outside in the sunlight the paint shows very nicely, but up-close it is possible to see lots of minor imperfections. The car has certainly been repainted in its original color. The chrome and stainless brightwork is straight and complete, but in unrestored condition. Likewise, the Campagnolo wheels are unrestored.
The interior is also in very original, unrestored, and somewhat weathered. The original mouse hair dash has faired quite well, although the seat, door panel, and console leather is showing some age and discoloration. This Jarama is fitted with tan cloth inserts on the front and rear seats. The carpets are also aged, but intact. The interior is completely stock, with all the factory gauges and switches present.
Mechanically, the car very strong. The engine starts easily, sounds crisp, and idles smoothly with excellent oil pressure. The clutch, gearbox, and brakes are all fully functional. Currently the car sits on well worn tires which should be changed.
This car is a fine opportunity to acquire one of these rare and sophisticated cars in its most desirable format. This car embodies everything that is unique to thoroughbred Italian sports cars in an unusual and practical package. It can be enjoyed as is, or alternatively, can be tidied and tinkered with as you enjoy it.
With the car comes the tool roll with some tolls, the Lamborghini service booklet, original delivery and importation papers, an extra side mirror, two spare chrome strips, and a massive stack of documentation for service work going back many, many years.
