The striking Lamborghini Jarama debuted in 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show. With its chiseled profile, expansive glass, and prominent front mounted V12 engine, Marcello Gandini’s Jarama was one of the most advanced designs to arrive out of Bertone’s studios. Gandini, well known for his stunning Miura and Countach positioned Lamborghini as an aesthetic innovator in the sports car world, challenging Ferrari for their premier leadership role, while Lamborghini engineer Giotto Bizzarini took care of mechanicals continuing development on the impressive quad cam V12 engine he designed. The Jarama replaced the Islero, making it the last front-engine Lamborghini GT, a tradition that began with the very first Lamborghini, the 350GT. Mechanically, the Jarama was similar to the more luxurious Espada, but rode on a wheelbase shortened by 10.6 inches, making the Jarama not only more agile and remarkably quick, but also the shortest wheelbase Lamborghini ever built.
Fitted with Lamborghini’s sophisticated quad-cam 3.9 liter V-12, all independent suspension, and five-speed gearbox, the Jarama was a deliberately understated high performance “businessman’s express” intended for those who appreciated Lamborghini’s engineering and performance, but who wanted a more practical subtle package. The resulting design delivered a fresh, wedge profile with sharp creases and muscular wheel arches, thin pillared glass, and distinctive partially covered headlights. Today, the Jarama remains one of the hallmarks of “folded paper” designs with more and more collectors beginning to appreciate the unique blend of performance and stunning design. Just 328 Jaramas were produced between 1970 and 1976, first as the GT, and then from 1972 to 1976 as the Jarama S (152 produced). The S models featured the more powerful 365hp V12, a hood scoop, exhaust vents, and new wheels. Ferruccio Lamborghini himself enjoyed driving his personal Jarama S, which remains on display at the Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy to this day.
This particular car is a very desirable Jarama S. The car is understood to have been sold new in San Francisco to a member of a large hotel family. The second owner purchased the car, subsequently putting into storage. After he passed away, the third owner (who owned in a Berkeley, CA automotive repair business) purchased the car out of storage, retaining it for roughly 20 years, enjoying it for his personal use. When he retired, he sold the car to the current owner, who has maintained it and used it sparingly. Under the current owner’s care, noted Lamborghini experts at Dino Motors flushed the coolant system, replaced upper, lower and smaller radiator hoses, removed and re-cored the radiator, replaced the fuel pump, installed new fuel lines, cleaned and adjusted the carburetors, needles, and seats, and installed a new battery. Further work included removing the fuel tank, cleaning the tank, installing a new fuel filter, and replacing additional fuel lines. Work was completed in May 2018, totaling approximately $8,000.
Today, this Jarama S appears in sound condition overall with older paint showing some cracking and other evidence of age. The body is straight and solid. The trim and exterior emblems are all in very good condition including the lenses, lighting, and the yellow Carello fog lamps. The rare Campagnolo cast wheels, unique to later series Jarama models, are in good condition with only minor surface marks, no major flaws, and shod with older Pirelli P4000 tires showing ample remaining tread. The emblems and badges are all in very good condition, adding finely designed touches to the clean body design. Throughout the car, the chrome trim remains clean and tidy, though showing a few areas of wear and aging.
The original interior is particularly nice in contrasting medium dark red leather against the black dash, carpets, and center console. Remarkably preserved and still in very nice condition, the interior shows very nicely with an even patina indicating the car has been carefully used and stored. The dash is very nice with a smooth top surface, excellent instrumentation, and a handsome wood steering wheel with matching gearshift knob. Even the center console toggle switches and satin black surfaces remain very fresh and thoughtfully preserved as does the center armrest, covered in original soft black material. There is mild wear on the driver’s side carpeting and front seat bottom, but the door panels and rear seating, remain very nice overall particularly contrasted against the full-length black center console. The trunk compartment is clean and tidy, encouraging weekend getaways by offering ample room for overnight luggage.
Under the hood, the 12 cylinder engine offers a delightful display of original components, correct wiring, hoses, and original finishes. Although not detailed to show level, the originality of the components speaks highly to the integrity of the car. Among the original and hard to find pieces under the hood, the centrally mounted overflow water tank, correct satin black air cleaner housings, and of course the six Weber carburetors all complete the very impressive factory appearance. The undercarriage remains in good unrestored condition, with sound floors, clean and undamaged finned cast aluminum engine oil pans, and solid structural steel front and rear frame members.
With the recent Dino Motors service having addressed engine mechanical systems, the car starts smoothly and drives well at this time. The car has a solid, original feel that validates the unrestored condition, while leaving opportunities for the new buyer to improve as they might see fit. The exhaust system has some holes and would benefit from replacement. An original owner’s manual and recent service records from Dino Motors accompany the car.
