White with Black Interior
Early 911`s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. Until quite recently, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the cars life very difficult today. All early 911`s have appreciated tremendously in recent years, with good solid cars seeing especially significant increases in value. The late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are very desirable, and are generally regarded to be the ultimate development of the original `long hood` 911. The 911E was the middle model of the 911 line, featuring mechanical fuel injection for more power and drivability than the 911T, but a less peaky motor than the 911S. The Targa was a unique and typically Porsche solution to the then current conception that convertibles would be legislated out of existence for the all important US market. They were able to take this inconvenient possibility and devise a functional and unusual solution that would eventually become iconic. With its heated glass rear window, fixed rollover hoop, and folding top that fit in the trunk, the Targa was a more practical, safer, and less disagreeable way to enjoy open air motoring. Just 861 911E Targas were built.
Thus, as a three-owner fully documented matching numbers West Coast 1972 911E Targa, this particular car is very desirable, in addition to being in excellent health. It was originally sold in April of 1972 in California, and has full documentation from new in the form of receipts and the books. Its second owner was from Washington State and the present owner was from Southern California. The original options include air conditioning, the full S package (body trim, instruments, steel front spoiler, front and rear sway bars, etc.), and Blaupunkt radio. The radio, air conditioning compressor, and condenser are not installed but are included with the car. The plumbing and vents are still in place. The car currently shows 19,587 miles, having turned over once, so the car has 219,587 miles, confirmed by the large stack of records.
The car has seen much work over the years and is now in outstanding mechanical order. The transmission and engine (including the fuel injection system) were rebuilt about 14,000 miles ago and the compression is between 143 and 148 pounds in all six cylinders when recently tested. The upper valve covers are aluminum and the lower ones are the 930 type. The oil lines were renewed and the left heater box replaced at that time as well. New stainless steel heat exchangers were also fitted and the motor is completely dry, above and below. The brakes were completely rebuilt 2000 miles ago (rebuilt calipers, lines, pads, rotors) and work superbly. The suspension is in fine shape as well, with aluminum crossmember, new tie rod ends, and new Bilstein shock absorbers.
As a result, the car is an excellent driving example. The engine sounds great and performs well, and the car is tight and responsive. The gearbox works well and the brakes are very effective. The car is quite civilized and comfortable, but also very sporting, and it is abundantly clear that the car has been properly looked after.
Aside from some paint flaws, the car is cosmetically good, both inside and out. The chrome and metal trim are very good to excellent, with the headlight trims being especially nice. European market H4`s have been fitted. The wheels are `deep-six` fuchs and have been beautifully polished. The rubber is in great condition, including the Targa seals, and new Yokohama tires were recently installed. The glass and lenses are excellent throughout. The car was originally blue but it was repainted in white. The paint makes a good initial impression, but close inspection reveals some areas of touch up and questionable prep. The rear window seal appears to have been left in when the car was repainted and has some overspray, but the remainder of the seals appears to have been removed. The body fit is excellent however, and the car is rust-free. There is no evidence of any accident damage, which the significant file also supports. There are however, several small door dings about the car, none of which are particularly apparent until you are a few feet away.
The interior is extremely nice, with superb seats and carpets, both of which were recently renewed. The quality of the work is extremely good. The dashboard and gauges are nice (even the clock works), aside from some cracking in the usual places. The typically distressed door pockets are in especially fine condition in this car, and a set of Lloyds embroidered overmats is fitted. The car also had three-point inertia reel seatbelts for the front seats.
The engine compartment is tidy and presentable, but not detailed for show, as is the trunk. All of the carpeting is present and in great condition. The underside reflects the honesty of the car, as well as the fact that the car has been kept in mild climates its entire life. The torsion bar mounts are in excellent rust-free condition and the floorpans are original and have excellent undercoating on them.
This is a great opportunity to acquire one of these fantastic cars. This car is from the best year and most importantly, its history and level of care are beyond reproach. The car drives superbly and also has a nice complement of options. With the spectacular appreciation that these cars have been enjoying, this car is not only a sound investment but also an extremely fun open-air way to enjoy one of the best models of one of the best cars ever built.
With the car come the records for work done, the factory jack and spare wheel with tire, the AC system complete with compressor and radiator (not installed), and the original radio.
