1973 Ferrari 365GT4 2+2
s/n 17505
Red with Tan Leather Interior
With their well-proportioned elegant Pininfarina styling and practical seating for four, the 365/400/412 line was one of the most popular and long-lasting Ferrari designs, enduring nearly two decades. In total, just 470 365 GT4 2+2s were built. Early cars have a great deal in common with the 365 GTC/4 including powertrain and drivetrain, much of the suspension, and even the wheels. The most obvious difference is the styling, which, while more subdued, is infinitely more practical for transporting passengers and baggage. Later cars have a reputation for being somewhat unwieldy and burdened by complex electronics, making an early example the enthusiast`s pick. Most late examples were also fitted with automatic transmissions, which further hampered the enthusiast driver`s experience. Consequently, an early car with its more responsive carbureted motor, minimal electronic assistance, and cleaner styling is a very attractive proposition. This is especially true in California, where this car is smog exempt and can be properly tuned for maximum power.
This particular example is and extremely early car and is fitted with the 5-speed manual, in addition to center-lock wheels with the triple eared knock-offs. It has been superbly maintained and is in all an extremely appealing example. There is a thick file of receipts for work performed within the last 20,000 miles or so, including but not limited to full rebuild of the cylinder heads, new center mufflers, brake system rebuild including soft lines, and countless other items. The tires were replaced less than 1,500 miles ago. Accordingly, the car works extremely well. It stops, goes and handles as Ferrari intended, and the second gear synchro is excellent when warm.
Cosmetically, the car is very nice as well. The paintwork is a reasonably good quality job, consistent with the value of car. Until it is closely scrutinized, the paint looks outstanding, but up close, there are a few flaws including minor wear, some light etching on the trunk lid, and some VERY MINOR (cosmetic only) bubbling on the fenders. The brightwork is all very nice, as are the wheels, which were recently refinished. The glass and lights are all very good, except for a crack in the front right turn signal-parking light assembly. The headlight motors work unusually well and the headlights are nice correct Carello units.
The interior makes an extremely strong impression. The seats and door panels were reupholstered and look absolutely stunning. The dashboard was also done and the craftsmanship is exemplary. A new set of tan floor mats with embroidered red prancing horses has also been recently fitted. The headliner and back seats are both original and have survived very nicely. There has also been a CD player and new components fitted.
The trunk presents very nicely and reveals a correct spare with Michelin XWX tire. The carpet set is whole and in excellent order, though the spring to hold the lid open is missing. The engine compartment is tidy and shows evidence of having been well looked after. A pair of auxiliary electric fans has been fitted to aid cooling, and a new set of spark plug wires is also in evidence. There are numerous new stainless steel braided oil lines fitted with Aeroquip fittings, according to the receipts.
On the whole, this is an excellent example of a car that is tremendously underappreciated, especially in a monetary sense. Consequently, many examples are case studies in deferred maintenance, which makes this car all the more remarkable. It has been well looked after, both mechanically and cosmetically, and drives accordingly. This car offers an almost identical ownership experience to the 365GTC/4 at a quarter of the price, and when compared to a 308, provides a purer Ferrari experience (front-engined V-12) at a similar cost.
