Description

1973 Porsche Carrera RS
s/n 3601334 engine no. 6631392
Viper Green with Black Leather Interior

The legendary Carrera RS is widely regarded to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest roadgoing Porsche ever. Its primary purpose was to homologate the car for competition use, which required the construction of a minimum of five hundred examples within twelve months. Eventually, the cars proved to be so popular that the production run was expanded several times, with an eventual total of 1580 cars being built. The cars themselves featured larger more powerful engines, flared rear wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels, numerous deletions and alterations to reduce weight, improved suspension, and a few cosmetic alterations, which would become the car’s trademark. With its distinctive contrasting striping and wheels and the simple and functional `burzel` or ducktail, the styling of the RS is iconic. The real treat, however, is in the driving. It epitomizes the ultimate Porsche experience with its immense tactility, balance, and nimbleness. Very few cars are as communicative and engaging as a properly set up 911 of this vintage, especially a Carrera RS.

According to the authoritative survey of the Carrera RS written by Thomas Gruber and Georg Konradsheim, this particular example was sold new in the Italian market, which explains why it is fitted with the rare Italian front turn indicator lenses. The book also indicates that the car was originally finished in the viper green that it wears today.

Cosmetically, the car makes an extremely strong impression with its evocative period color combination and correctly finished fuchs alloy wheels. The paintwork was performed to high standards and shows minimal blemishes, just a few very small chips on the front, and a very small crack in one of the gutters. The body is straight, and the gaps very good. The car retains its metal bumper over riders and full deco trim, which many Touring models often have lost in an effort to mimic the more Spartan M471 Lightweight models. The trim is very nice, with only very light scratches. The glass and lights are in excellent order, as is the rubber. The car retains its orange bar hood crest, as well as its correct welded RS flares and RS bumper tips.

The interior is mostly original and has been very well preserved. The factory Recaro sport seats wear their original leather, which is showing its age in places, but remains supple. The remainder of the interior is in extremely nice condition, including the carpets, headliner, instruments, and switches. The often deteriorated map pockets are in great shape in this example, and the car is fitted with an older Blaupunkt radio. The car has a 300kph speedometer and retains the smaller diameter RS steering wheel. The dashboard is very good, with one small crack (less than half an inch) from the defroster vent to the speaker grille. The speaker grille itself is showing age as well.

The engine compartment is extremely clean and well-detailed and has the appearance of having been recently restored. The correct cadmium plating is present on the throttle linkage, oil cap, and various other hardware. The car has been fitted with Carrera oiled chain tensioners and is otherwise quite correct in appearance.

The trunk is also extremely nice. The correct carpets sections are still in place, as is the plastic fuel tank and collapsible spare. The tool roll with tools is also present. The inner panels are very solid and crisp in appearance.
